fuel injector module
my dad has a 99 powerstoke that loss all power on him the other day. from what the mechanic where he works has figured out is that its possibly the fuel injector module. problem is no one knows where it can be found on motor to check it. also was wondering if a fuel injector module off a 96 powerstoke could be used to see if thats the problem? thanks for the help

i'm going to guess you're talking about the IDM (injector driver module) the 6.0 has a FICM (fuel injector control module) i'm pretty sure the IDM's are interchangeable between the years on the 7.3. i know on the OBS they are on the drivers fender next to the fuse box. i don't know where they are on the SD's...

IDM from an OBS will work, but its a lower power unit. Get a superduty unit if you need one.
The IDM on a Superduty is behind the drivers side fender. You have to pull the fender liner to get to it. Dumb place to put it but thats where ford thought it made sense...LOL |
good to know. can you even see it from the top or do you have to take the inner fender out?
|
what is obs?
|
Old Body Style. (94- 97)
|
original body style (94-97)
|
by chance would anyone have pictures of where the IDM are?
|
joe might...
|
I dont have any pictures and could not come up with any on google...
Just remove the drivers side inner fender liner, its mounted to the inside of the fender toward the cab. |
so kinda like on the OBS just further down?
|
Yes, but you CAN NOT access it from inside the engine bay, you have to get to it from the fender.
|
ok good to know. so with stock injectors would it be worth it to get a upgraded IDM?

Yes you can run an IDM out of a SD in an OBS

No, A later model Superduty (Late 99 to 03 7.3l) IDM is actually an upgrade for the 96-early 99 7.3, the later in years, the higher the voltage output. There is also a mod with a resistor to make the OBS IDM crank up the voltage. Just get yourself a IDM from a 02 or 03 7.3 and be happy. If you can't find one you can buy a refurbed one for under 175 from a guy in florida. I can find his webpage again if someone needs it, I've been running on his 140V unit for over 3 years, no issues.
But to clarify, you can interchange any IDM's from a 7.3L Powerstroke... PCM's cannot be interchanged like that. |

When infact you can use a SD IDM in an OBS, people do it all the time as an upgrade. |
Read his question:
"ok guys is there any reason the idm out of a sd not work on a obs" To answer in the affirmative, as in yes, would denote that the idm out of a SD would NOT work in a OBS. To answer in the negative, as in no, would denote that it would work. Also in the answering response it clearly states that a SD IDM is an upgrade for the OBS. |
