hello, i have an 01 ford p/s with an automatic that i/m going to haul 20,000-30,000lbs commercially every day. What is the best type of cooler for this?

A tranny cooler

Seriously though, you want as big a tranny cooler as you fit in the truck. I wrote up my install but now I can't find it on the site. I put what Summit Racing called a 45K tranny cooler in right behind the grille, fills in almost the entire grille to give you an idea of size. With a 22K excavator I've never seen above 175. The cooler was like 100 bucks and took about an hour to plumb in parallel with the stock unit.

A lot of guys use the 6.0 tranny coolers, however the price of them has come up recently, so a lot of guys are using tranny coolers from Summit or Jegs, such as NYDiver has suggested.

Nydiver, there is an upstate diesel dyno day Aug 13th in Lake Placid BTW.

I'll try and make it there. Is anything coming together for Utica cruise in next Tuesday? I'd have to buff her up a bit, winter was pretty cruel to the inner door panels.

I found some pics if you want to see what I did. I used a Summit fluid cooler:

Summit Racing SUM-G4969 - Summit Racing® Transmission Coolers - Overview - SummitRacing.com

mocked it in place, popped in 4 holes, used the mounting hardware supplied to mount it, cut the trans lines that went to the factory cooler which are on the passengers side right up front where its easy to reach, and put in 2 brass tees so I could mount the cooler in parallel with the stock unit. You can also just cut 1 line and divert fluid to the cooler and hook the return from the cooler to the other side of the line you cut.

Easy as pie. Hardest part was checking and double checking and slapping myself that this cooler fits so well that it looks like Summit intended for its size to fit in the space perfectly. Its 1.5" thick so its a little snug, but its so easy once you get in there and start it would be silly to use the smaller 6.0 cooler.

cooler installed, not to bad of a job. took notice that the trans is running 15 degrees cooler around town already!!! do most people run the tranny cooler lines through the radiator like the factory or run them separate??? i could see advantages and disadvantages to both i guess...
