Oil consumption?

You do an oil change, confirm you have properly filled it with oil, when is the next time you add oil, next oil change, after 2000 miles, how low is it at the next oil change?

Re: Oil consumption?

2000 is not very long to run your oil. You can extend that out and go 3000-4000 miles. I have never know if mine burns oil or not I have always had oil leaks.

All of my 7.3L trucks have been this way.

And to be fair I have a drop or two on the ground every morning from a pedistal leak that I just dont care enough to fix...

I am burning a qt per 1000.

i'm a quart down and i just changed it 2 weekends ago, 2,000miles. i usually add about a gallon on 7500 miles change. i like everyone else it seems, have a oil leaking out the seal and the dipstick nut on the oilpan...

wmorrispilot 07-01-2011 06:04 PM

2000 F-250 143000+ I go 5000 miles on ever oil change and have always. Never needed to add a drop of oil.... Been a great truck but just burnt the tranny so workin on tha now.....

PHPDiesel 07-05-2011 06:09 PM

4500 miles on the '00 (cross-country trip and started with almost 2000 miles on the oil already) and it's still as honey-colored as new oil and down on the dipstick about 3/16".

CSIPSD 07-06-2011 12:11 PM

LOL... Mine is Black as coal in about 300 miles...

PHPDiesel 07-07-2011 08:32 PM

Of the 5 diesel trucks I've owned since '99, NONE of them have ever had black oil at changing time. One Cummins and four Powerstrokes.

bowietrucking 07-14-2011 08:14 PM

dang, what kind of oil you guys run that doesnt turn black? i was using rotalla and it got black after a couple thousand miles, and now i switched over to cenpeco to compare some oil samples and it got black just as fast i think. when i drove big truck, it seemed like the oil got black in couple days.

The Excursion stays clean until about 3k...

Mine is Black as coal in about 300 miles.

but lots of blowby and low compression will do that.

It's about time to change the oil on the 2000. I have about 4500 miles on it (I've already beaten myself up about being 1500 over my personal limit) since I drove it across the country with 2000 miles on it beforehand.

It's down about 1/4" and it's still not black.

For comparison, here's some 1000 mile oil out of a 153K mile LB7 Duramax with a couple badly leaking injectors:

Here is the 240K 1995 with 2100 miles on the oil....

I'll do the same tomorrow... Yours looks a little better then mine

PHPDiesel 07-14-2011 11:53 PM

A close family friend suggested that maybe the oil I am using just didn't have enough detergent in it. :w2:

Hmm.

Valve covers/rockers, etc. were spotless. No sludge, no black ANYTHING. I'd say that the Premium Blue has been doing it's job just fine.
