boost help?!

so i think i know what the problem is, ive had two dealers look at it and one diesel shop.. but this is whats happening. i watch my boost gauge, and when my psi gets above 25.4, it goes insane and throws codes such as the icp sensor and waste gate... turning on my engine light. the first two times i took it right to a dealer and they couldnt find anything wrong.. so them two codes keep getting thrown and i just clear them and it is fine. this normally happens when i get going above 60 and then go up a really big steep hill pulling a heavy trailer or if i am racing.. what im asking is, what exactly is going on and what do i need to do to fix this problem? :argh::argh::argh: thanks for any help

I have heard of people using a boost fooler. Has it always thrown codes or just recently?

strokinf350 06-08-2011 07:44 PM

just since ive put them mods on

95powersmoker 06-08-2011 08:56 PM

It's probably throwing an overboost code, which will happen when the boost gets to a certain point... This will tell the computer to start defueling the truck...

Do you happen to know exactly what code was thrown?

CSIPSD 06-08-2011 10:18 PM

Sounds like surge to me, plus overboost...

Thats turbo surge on a 7.3...

strokinf350 06-08-2011 10:49 PM

ya the codes thrown are: icp sensor uncontrollable, and uh.. something with the wastegate i dont exactly remember that one cause sometimes it throws two or three for the wastgate

csipsd, i think your right on the turbo surge part, which ats housing should i look into?

CSIPSD 06-08-2011 10:51 PM

And ATS compressor housing will fix your surge issues...

strokinf350 06-08-2011 11:05 PM

its been a while since ive chatted with you on here.. bout six months lol.. so pretty much that is what i need to fix my problem?

CSIPSD 06-08-2011 11:15 PM

Your surge issue for sure... The other codes you will need other repairs.

The overboost code... Fix...

Riffraff Diesel: OCR - Overboost Code Regulator

The ICP code is from running a tuner, they will cause that code when your tuning asks for more ICP then the HPOP can give.

im gonna have to get the one with the wastegate that pops up every now an then.. what aftermarket of that should i get?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

am i readin that right that it will only let my boost go to 22? or is that just what itll read but itll keep going up?

It will only let the PCM see 22#'s boost, meaning your truck will not set the overboost code and your PCM will not defuel the truck.

Is your wastegate unplugged?

strokinf350 06-09-2011 09:47 PM

it shouldnt be but i can look.. it only throws that code bout once a month.. like if i go racin or pullin a full load of cattle up a big hill

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

for the ats ported shroud compressor housing, would that be a long term fix? like could i still use it if i upgraded my exhaust?

The compressor housing goes on the intake side of your turbo... It does not care what exhaust you have on your truck.

it is not a performance upgrade, it is a surge cure... Just keep that in mind.

If u want performance and take care of the surge get a Garrett 38R ball baring turbo. I think it's the cheapest drop in performance replacement turbo for these trucks. I have one it's never surged while driving.

Remember that you have two choices for the ported housing, either ATS or the USA.

Not necessarily true... I had surge issues BAD for years with my 38R... My bitching is one of the reasons they redesigned it about 2 years ago.

Well mine has never surged except when power breaked and let off the gas really quick. So im pretty sure mine is a newer one I think it's less then 2 years old.

strokinf350 06-11-2011 10:17 PM

my bad where i said exhaust,, i ment upgraded my turbo,

and yes i know its not a performance part, im lookin to fix all the problems i listed above..

what would the next best turbo be for a truck like mine?

Riffraff Performance 06-13-2011 09:23 AM

An H2e would be a good match as well.... Just depends on your budget. Have you looked into the OCR route to see if that will do it?
