fuel mileage

What mods can be done to increase fuel mileage, and what's the best mileage you've gotten from your 7.3? :humm: James

95powersmoker 06-02-2011 08:19 PM

I've gotten as good as 20...

My average is 16-17...

The most important factor is driving style... Having everything in tip top shape is also important...

jessh 06-03-2011 08:36 AM

I get about 14 but its constant dosent change much

PHPDiesel 06-03-2011 08:50 AM

2x4 under the accelerator pedal and raw egg taped to the bottom of your right shoe.

You could also find an early 90's beater car for daily commuting......

If you make granny look like a speed demon you'll get the best numbers. Remember the weight of these trucks, it won't compare to a Ford Escort.

I appreciate all of the replies, but my question was, "What mods can be done to increase fuel mileage and what's the best mileage you have gotten from your 7.3?". No one has any real world experience with this? Aren't there computer chips, exhuast systems, air intake systems out there that can increase performance and mileage? I heard this site was "the bomb"! lol :jump: James

I get about 16 mpg normally and 13 or so towing a 22 ft enclosed trailer at 70 mph. Does anyone have any experience with before and after mods of things like chips, air intake, exhaust, changing gears to 3.73's from 4.10's...that sort of stuff.

What about converting to peanut oil or whatever it's called? :c: Thanks and keep the replies coming. James

I drive a 2005 Honda Accord to work everyday. I am looking to cut costs for towing across the country. James

Tuning companies would be worth billions of dollars if they could find a way to guarantee better fuel economy.

It is what it is. Seriously.

jshblain 06-04-2011 05:14 PM

ive done a superchip flash pack, boost power ups mpg a little. it has a clean burnin tune, not alot of smoke, best bank for the buck, also typical stuff, intake, exhaust, all helps. one other thing ive done is a high pressure oil line cross over, connects the to heads together for oil passages. im not sure if it helped out my mpg but it helped the idles. runs alittle smoother so im sure its not hurting. got the line from strictly diesel, got the tuner an exhaust from kt performance. great to deal with he's a sponsor on here. check out his site. great guy to deal with ktperformance.net

That was highway driving only and keeping it at about 65mph or just a hair over 2k rpms

Not much you can do...

So your truck is stock, no mods at all? James

My truck is not stock anymore... I have the mods in my sig... The 20mpg was on a stock truck...

CSIPSD 06-05-2011 06:22 PM

I get about 14...

Dont chip it expecting to get better mileage, you will be disappointed.

Throwing a chip or programer on it "can" lead to better mileage, but 9 times out of 10 it does not.

Lower your truck, put smaller tires on it, over inflate the tires, keep the RPM's under 2000...

Mean Lx 06-05-2011 06:32 PM

What about changing the gears to 3.73's from 4.10's? Has anyone done this? James

You will never recoupe the cost of doing the gears... Your going to spend $2000 or more to swap gear sets...

Its like people who drive 10-15 miles out of there way to get 4 cents a gallon cheaper Diesel... You will never recoupe the cost.

jshblain 06-05-2011 07:37 PM

dont over inflate your tires, you will lose it in the cost of replacing tires by wearing the center of them fast than the edge, keep them at rated psi an keep you foot out of it, my opinion mod at will your going to get best results with moderate driving habits

I am guilty of this 1, I will even calulate the mileage to and from the station, compare it to a closer station, figure in my fuel mileage, mileage on the truck, the difference in the cost of fuel, say 8 cents, and still drive 13.47 miles out of my way for the cheaper fuel, LOL.:humm:

hamjamie27 06-08-2011 06:59 PM

Good info.

strokinf350 06-08-2011 07:19 PM

I assume that those numbers came from the overhead display. If so, I think you should calculate the mileage manually (miles traveled divided by gallons used). I suspect that you will be humbled by the results.

GEES, way to burst a bubble. LOL.

LOL, when people tell me they arent a jerk, I always say, "hmm, I am, well, more of an ahole".

PHPDiesel 06-09-2011 11:44 AM

I tend to not sugar-coat things or beat around the bush when explaining things. I used to, but my recent dealings in customer service have taught me that it's easier just to say what is what. I'm not a people person, but I manage. :c:

redneckpipeliner 06-09-2011 12:48 PM

I hate people, people are stupid and the general population shouldnt be allowed to reproduce. Thats all people want is a nice thick layer of sugar coating, because when the sugar has been all ate up by the ants people get their panties all in a wad, get their little girl feeling hurt and then dont want to believe the truth, especially bad here in Ca because, well I am sure you know why.

95powersmoker 06-09-2011 12:59 PM

:offtopic:

Let's not get too far from the topic guys...

strokinf350 06-09-2011 09:35 PM

php.. them last numbers came from my trip (miles), divided by the gallons that i put in, right off of the pump at town pump.. my cousin was with me last i did it.. i did it twice because i didnt believe it myself. and yes i know it is possible cause one of my dads fords, 2001, just has an intake and chip and it gets 18-19 consistently, when not pullin a trailer. and yes a can do math, placed at a national math contest and got a 35 on my math on the ACT not once, but twice

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

:c:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

like i said, that is strictly HIGHWAY mileage. when i stop at a stoplight or anywhere in town,, well,, thats a different story on the mileage :yeah:

holtzfan 06-13-2011 09:36 PM

I agree with the notion of "it is what it is". I just put a chip, intake, and exhaust on my truck and I will be watching the mileage closely driving normal. If there is no difference after the mods, then I will hot rod the shit out of it because it makes me happy!

strokinf350 06-13-2011 11:29 PM

that a boy!!!

logdrum 07-16-2011 01:22 PM

Highway Miles - I cannot believe this From Golden Colorado to Northeast Albuquerque. 493 miles. I just filled up 22.7 gallons (stopped at first click both times). 21.7 mpg. And that is driving 75-80 mostly 80 (speed limit is 75). Minimum elevation 5000 ft above sea level, it is not flat here. Everything stock, used Diesel Kleen. E rated tires at 65 psi. 2001 F350 with a manual. 2 adults 2 kids. About 500 lbs in the bed.

This makes me smile. We will be towing the horse trailer with 2 Percherons, a Thoroughbred and a big pony. Don't know how heavy that will be to Flagstaff AZ next 2 weeks. Will report again.

Mrfixit 02-09-2012 02:07 PM

i have installed a bullydog GT tuner and it was telling me i was getting 22 MPG on a road trip - i had a ear to ear grim :jump: ---- until i calculated my MPG manually - more like 14 :argh:

thats running 37's with a 6" lift and a 01 F-350 4X4 and 4:30 in the rear - changed out the stock 3:73 due to the towing i will be doing along with a few goodies.

i don't know if i trust my odometer with the larger tires though:s:

ERICWAYNE14 02-11-2012 09:27 AM

OK yes you get what you get with a diesel. But if you have access to other means of fuel and you are still moderately stock running alternative fuels can work. "veggie oil" in any combination takes a conversion kit to run properly and over time depending on your access to it will br cheaper then diesel. Not much better fuel mileage tho. I run used transmission fluid filtered three times in a mostly stock engine. I get 20 on the hiway with 373 inch tires and a 6inch lift. I can run 100 percent but the power goes down and it smokes a little bit more. And I dont pay for the fuel. So I save money. Once I add more power the percent has to go down. And during the winter even with cetane booster I have to run at least 25 percent diesel because I don't have a fuel heater in tank.

rubyred 02-15-2012 03:04 PM

i think aftermarket exchaust, cold air intake and a flash tuner like bully dog help with milage quite a bit my egt's went down quite a bit just cruising down the highway. when i had these simple mod done to my 00 7.3 i was getting 18mpg , 14 on the interstate. and i usually drove it like a teenager

scislander 11-25-2012 10:26 PM

I just bought a really nice 2000 7.3 (auto trans) and it only has 110K. It gets 19mpg on the highway running 65. I bought it specifically for this motor's ability to run WVO. It does it VERY well. The fuel rails actually heat the WVO just fine all by themselves as that oil has to travel through the heads to get to the injectors. I know three 7.3 owners who do it, one has put 50,000mi on his. No doubt ... you need a heat exchanger and a good filter but it works well if done right.

CSIPSD 11-26-2012 09:59 AM

I would pick up a spare set of injectors for your WVO use. Its not if, but when you will need to replace them.

Also dont expect to get a core refund if you sent your old ones back, they will be trashed.

scislander 11-26-2012 05:38 PM

no problems thus far. I have a friend who has put thousands of miles on his and have met several people over the last two years who do this. The 7.3 is pretty close to being the perfect motor for WVO.

I have a biodiesel processor but when I consider how well it runs on WVO, why process?
