7.3 white smoke

hey guys i have a 01 7.3 with ts 6 position chip, 4 inch exhaust, and afe intake. other than that the motor is stock. it is blowing white smoke under acceleration and when i let off. not so much with cold starts or at idle. im thinking it is a bad injector or the turbo. ive also heard ppl say it could be a mat sensor. any input would be helpful. thanks.

Does it go away fairly quickly? White smoke is normal on cold starts... It's just unburnt fuel. If it doesn't clear up, then you might have an issue.

Try and get a wiff of the smoke... Could be oil, could be fuel, could be coolant.

it doesnt smoke at idle or start up. it smokes during acceleration up to around 40 mph and also puts out alot when i let off from cruising at high way speeds. seems to be white and a little bit of a blue tint possibly. but it still runs fine with no rough idle or missing...which makes me think that its not a injector issue. my thoughts are that its the turbo...it does have 176000 miles on the stock turbo.

also it only seems to do this after its had a good chance to warm up...after 15 minutes of driving or so..its hard to get a whiff of the exhaust in the driveway cuz it will only smoke if i rev it up and its diffucult to run around the truck and get a whiff with the wind blowing like it is.

I would agree its the turbo. You can remove the intake and check for excessive play and also remove the down pipe and check for oil or sludge build up from a leaking seal.

i havent got the chance to pull off the intake and down pipe to take look at the turbo yet..should there be any play in the shaft? ....i have looked at some turbos online and the garrett 38r turbo seems to be a good route for the price. im not looking for big horsepower..but putting a stock thrust bearing turbo back into the truck isnt what i want to do. any thoughts?

There might be some side to side but it shouldn't touch the housing. You don't want any in and out play.

38r is a great, inexpensive option for you.

ok well when i get the chance to check out the turbo i will post what i find. i just hope that i dont spend the money on a new turbo and still have my truck blowin white smoke going down the road lol. but i cant really think of any reasons for the white smoke seeing how it doesnt miss or cut out or smoke at start up or idle. still runs great. it mists a little bit out of the oil filler cap but that seems to be normal..also gets great oil pressure. and i dont notice any lost coolant or coolant on the dipstick. so a leaky turbo seems to be my problem

did you ever figure out what it was? i'm having that problem now even after getting a new turbo.
