studdering when not fully in the throttle
 
hey i just bought this 2000 f350 powerstroke. it has some miles on it but all and all great truck. the big problem im haveing is when your trying to maintain speed so your not in the throttle but not quite out of it either it starts to really jump around and studder. i can either take my foot out of the throttle or i can apply more pressre the the peddle and it will quit. not showing any service engine sign or anything. i changed the fuel filter with a wix, and yes i now know to get on through the ih dealer. that did seem to help so now it doesnt do as much, but still enough to make u want to fix it asap! when i run diesel kleen through it, it does seem to make a big difference. so if u guys have any advice to give then please help me out if u can. thnks

I'd Start with testing the batteries, make sure they're holding a charge. Then test your fuel pump, if it checks out, you may need to look at your sending unit and see if the little filters inside are not causing the issue. Does your fuel gage act weird intermittently? That is sometimes the sign the sending unit will need to be repaired or replaced. If those procedures check out test your CPS (cam position sensor)?

When you changed the fuel filter, was it oily in the fuel bowl?

hey guys thnks very much for the advice. and when i changed to fuel filter i only changed the one right on top of the motor. i looked and looked and could never find another one and everybody said i only had the one. and it has right at 250,xxx on it with stock tires and a flatbed.

and as far as the batt goes this truck had a very bad winter which is mostly my fault i now know. it had to be jumped sveral times a week. so yes i need new batts. could this have to do with the problems im haveing even though im haveing these problems even when iv been on the road for hours. and yes of course i was told to cycle the glow plugs two or three times before starting, i now know thats crap, thnks salesmen. i do plan on changeing to the stancors asap. and i hear that i can get up to 25mpg with the 7.3 if i buy a chip. is there any truth to this?

if you find a way to get 25 mpg out of your 7.3 please let me know too... I have only be able to get it up to 17 mpg.... I can get the readout on the visor to say I'm getting 20 mpg but in actuality I'm only getting 16...

lol ya thats what i was thinking. seems like i can about the 17 mark, with a flatbed and without a chip. u know im not pulling a house going down the road so i just dont care about the hp per say, but i would def like to sneak up there on the 20mpg if there were any possible way.

That is the only fuel filter, so you're good there. Was there oil in the fuel bowl when you changed it or was it clean fuel?

You will not get 25mpg in these trucks... They are big, heavy and have the aerodynamics of a damn brick. That being said, I have gotten 20mpg one time. Highway driving keeping your speeds around 60-65 and you will get yourself close to that.

Now with that truck having 250k miles... It might be an issue with injectors that is causing this. Does your truck idle nicely or is it kind of rough?

well for the most part in does idle nice but there does seem to be a small hickup but nothing that draws any attention. have u ever had to change the injectors? im showing that they run like 335 a peice? is there any other options? i would maybe like to get a little bigger opening but i know nothing about this.

Before we go assuming its injectors, lets start with the basics...

You just bought the truck... Have you changed the oil? Have you gone through a tank of fuel yet? In our trucks, clean oil and clean fuel are essential. Might even be worth running an injector cleaner in the fuel for a tank.

I would also try to get a fuel pressure gauge on that truck so you can watch your fuel pressure when you are having issues.
