Another disappointment in this 7.3

so i overall like this truck for the ride, comfort and suspension, but towing with it sucks. I need ideas on what to do to make it pull a little better please. i put a 4" tb exhaust on it and a napa filter but as far as towing its damn gutless compared to my cummins. Yesterday i was towing my 16' enclosed spray trailer which maybe weighs a total of 7,000 and the damn truck struggled to keep it at 70 mph????? I had to have it out of od because it wouldnt hold od on flat roads??? and my rpms were at a constant 2700-2900 which i think is ungodly high. Any other truck ive driven even my 1/2 ton hemi could pull it easier and my mileage was 8.5mpg. So what else could i do??? The truck doesnt smoke one bit and runs awesome empty but is this just how these 7.3 are or what. any help is appreciated cause im starting to think maybe i should sell it and go back to dodge already and its only been about a month. thanks in advance

I think you have another problem. I dont tow much but when I have mine tows like a champ. What are your egts and boost when towing?

jakobengland 03-03-2011 03:32 PM

I love my 7.3s but you could do a cummins swap and have the best towing truck around.

skinnysfd 03-03-2011 03:38 PM

egts are normal highest i have seen is 1100 and boost im not sure but it spools up fine and sounds normal. I even jumped into a buddys 7.3 and it was the same way it just feels gutless to me

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

maybe im just so used to the torque of my other cummins that its normal for these trucks to tow like this

prison 03-03-2011 03:42 PM

maybe do a few upgrades. maybe a tow tune as well

Kyle_KleinSS 03-03-2011 04:01 PM

I would go for a chip then. You are comparing your 7.3 to a vehicle that was 7 years newer. Compare it to a 99 24v and well, I dont know about any of your friends with 24v cummins, but I have 4 friends with them and they got no balls. They are just loud and sound like they are spitting the crank out

skinnysfd 03-03-2011 04:35 PM

yeah im prolly gonna go with the ts 6 position chip. And i will beg to differ with ur previous statement because my dad had a 99 cummins and it would wipe the floor with this truck and after he put his edge on it and a couple other mods my 05, and 06 cummins wouldnt have touched it

Kyle_KleinSS 03-03-2011 05:38 PM

Hmm not sure then. All my buddies are terds. They have quadzillas and fuel systems. No trannies yet. Maybe thats their last piece to fix

skinnysfd 03-03-2011 05:44 PM

the edge made a huge difference and then he put in a raptor pump and a goerend tranny it was a sweet truck but unfortunatly it got totaled out. Oh well but i am ordering my ts 6 position chip tomorrow:tu: hopefully it helps

95powersmoker 03-03-2011 05:56 PM

Get a chip for it, like said above, you're comparing a 7.3 to a CR and that is a tough way to look at it.

ltr450 03-03-2011 06:26 PM

like said before you are comparing it to a new truck and truck with mods. i felt the same way when i got my 96 12v and i was use to drive my dads 06 cummins. when i got my truck it was all stock and there is a nice hill by my house and you can't get a running start and i couldn't even get out of third gear it was like driving a ford ranger. know with my mods on the same hill i can hit fifth gear 3/4 way up with a load behind it.

I would also consider looking at some of people who tune these trucks, Canned ts tunes are good, but having Bill at PHP, Tony Wildman, or Swamps tune it it will probably be a bit better. You can save your self money by going through them now, other than buying a ts and then paying for reburns later. Them are just a few of the tuners out there there are many more. Just something to think about:tu:

stackboy6.9 03-05-2011 01:15 AM

add air intake, straight pipe, chip, bigger turbo and some injectors.it should pull fine with those muds

skinnysfd 03-06-2011 08:02 AM

already have the air intake, straight pipe and newer injectors. Im gonna go with the ts chip and see what it does

powerstroke cowboy 03-06-2011 09:29 AM

Do yourself a faver and do not get the chip from TS... Go with Phill at Power hungry performance.... He has the TS style chip.. But his tunes would be twice as good as the TS tunes... Is it a Auto tranny???? if so then yes it would be a gutless pig...

Your HPOP might be weak to.. That will make them feel like a pig. And you will lose a lot of low end torque with a weak HPOP...

I just saw you said newer injectors are they stock???

PS: my 97 Powerstroke will blow the doors of my friends 99 cummins... :pca1:

I am just messing with you :hellox:

skinnysfd 03-06-2011 07:06 PM

yes they are stock injectors and is there a way to test the hpop or if it is bad what do i go with??? also yes its a rebuilt auto tranny. But i did find another cummins i might be looking into as well and might use that one for my pulling truck and use the ferd for snowplowing

95powersmoker 03-06-2011 07:17 PM

Your HPOP is more than likely fine..

skinnysfd 03-06-2011 09:08 PM

ok thanks

powerstroke cowboy 03-07-2011 08:28 PM

you HPOP is most likly good.. But could be weak... To test them you would need a HPOP gauge Isspro kakes a nice one... As for a replacement... Adrenaline HPOP from Dieselsite are realy good... They flow more Oil then a stock pump and higher PSI to...

CSIPSD 03-07-2011 09:14 PM

As much as a HPO gauge is cool, it is not a good tool to gauge how good or bad a HPOP is working.

Pressure is only part of the equation, duty cycle and PW is also important.

What you really need is a good diagnostic tool, like Autoenginuity.

Bigred7.3 03-08-2011 08:29 PM

id go with the ts 6 position chip. ill admit my 7.3 with no chip dosnt really have a lot of "get up n go" i jus put the ts 6 position in my friends 2000 7.3 and it woke that truck up, and it pull like a damn ox.

skinnysfd 03-09-2011 07:21 AM

Well im gonna try my buddies superchips first and see what happens because now the damn truck has a really rough idle and almost like a hesitation at take off now im really getting sick of this 7.3 already

riddick01 03-09-2011 08:53 AM

i ran a superchip on mine for a while and it was good compared to stock...a ton more power off the line but its got NOTHING on a custom tuned ts chip...i dont tow much but about 3 weeks after i put on the ts i hauled 2000lb of feed in the bed and it did it now problem.

skinnysfd 03-09-2011 08:59 AM

k thanks im just gonna try it and if it seems to make a little bit of difference then im ordering my ts chip. My problem is i tow everyday and my lightest trailer is 6,000lbs on average i have close to 10,000 or more hooked up behind me and never had issues with it before, but due to the divorce like i said before i had to downsize a little bit for a couple months. im just hopeing that with a little bit of money this truck will be able to do it and be a good back up truck in case my new one ever breaks down

Bigred7.3 03-09-2011 08:48 PM

rough idol and hesitant to take off is mor then likly a bad injector, my truck now has 2 bad injectors number 4 and number 5 and its the same rough idol and hesitation at take off.
