BAD VIBRATION OUT OF FRONT END

THIS IS MY LAST QUESTION ONE DAY I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND THE TRUCK BEGAN MAKING A VIOLENT RUMBLE THEN AFTER AWHILE I PUT ON THE 4WD AND IT STOPPED ANY POSSIBILITY IF COULD BE THE FRONT HUB BEARING?

PHPDiesel 01-03-2011 10:03 AM

Could be.

Check the seal where the axle shaft enters the rear of the bearing. It could be that went out and is allowing the shaft to slap around...which will destroy the bearing.

thanks that looks like it was under there today is it a hard job to replace that bearing in the front right diff?

First one I did took me 4+ hours...learned alot. When I did the other side it was just over 2 hours to do the actual job. Look over everything while you have stuff apart too. You may find things needing replaced (like I usually do), and can do it before it goes back together.

Did this problem sound like a tire rubbing? Sounds similar to what mine is doing.

When my second one (passenger side) went out it did resemble a rubbing tire. Drivers side was...well, that was bad!

My passenger side didn't make any noise cause it wasn't all the way out yet. I replaced it while I had the calipers and such off. The front left, is making a god awful rubbing noise about twice after startup. Then, it don't do it anymore. I've beat my truck to death. Taking curves WAYYY to fast. Hitting bumps really fast. Even spun the tires in 4 wheel drive. I can't get it to do it but after start up. Makes me think it isn't what I thought

i had my hub barrings get screwed (an inch of play in any direction if not more) and it didnt make a rubbing noise. it pulled really bad and made a sort of poping sound when i hit speed bumps in my friends appt complex (the kinda speed bumps that arnt wide but are tall and give u a good jolt) and it also squeeked when i turned at low speed (i think i only heard it at low speed bc of engine noise being less and having the windows down. hope that helps

Hey guys... first post here.
I'm new to the Powerstroke world and slowly learning as I'm ironing out the bugs with the truck I just bought. Picked up a 98 1/2 f-250 (newer body style) for 6,000 with known issues with the injector wiring and a (what I thought) bad D/S wheel bearing. I replaced the D/S injector harness as I've learned they corrode and go out. Seems to run better but still blows a lot of smoke in the morning... Thats for another post.

As for my front end gremlins pertaining to this post... Replaced the hub assy.($250) what I thought my noise was surely a bad wheel bearing. The noise would be some what of a vibration out of my left foot with an inconsistent high pitched whine that would seem to go away when it was wet out. After replacing the hub and rubber seal which was gone on the inside of the axle... the noise was still there. I then repacked the locking hub... no change. I surely thought those would be the 2 main active parts along side of the universal joint which when pulled felt to be ok. Only parts not replaced were the hub knuckle seal (metal ring behind hub) which seemed to be ok, and the ball joints.

I thought I narrowed everything down but could my knuckle seal really be the cause of this noise/vibration in the D/S front end? it seems to be getting worse and sometimes will stop briefly for a period of time when you hit a bump.
