hard start after sitting for a week or more

Friend of mine has a 2001 or 2002 F250.........he says it starts hard after sitting for extended periods of time..........says it cranks over and does not want to fire at all the first time he trys....then it eventually starts but act likes it is rich or flooded.........is ok if he piuts it on the heater.....so I was thinking glow plugs or GPR .......but he says once it starts it is fine and if he starts it again the next day it is fine.......so now I am thinking fuel related.......what do you guys think ?? ever hear of it ??

Does it smoke once its started, what color? How many miles on the truck? If it starts good when its been plugged in but has a hard time starting if it hasn't been plugged in i would suspect GPR and/or Glow plugs.

Next time, try jumping the two big studs on the GPR for about 30 seconds with a screwdriver, then jump in and try to start. If it starts... GPR is bad.

Good advice right there. I would also pop the hood and check the HPO res to make sure its not leaking back while parked.

There is a plug here in place of the oil pressure sender. Remove that plug and look down in the HPOR. It should be within a 1/2 or so of the top.

If it is not..... what to replace ???
you are reading that pressure also ??? thought that was big psi ?? must be the third gauge down on the RH pillar ??? hehe !!

CSIPSD 12-11-2010 10:57 PM

That is the HPO Res... There is only low pressure oil in there, see's about 25-70 psi.

And the HPO gauge is on the steering column...:bat:

So what to fix if his Hpop res is low? is there a check valve that need replaced ?

CSIPSD 12-12-2010 11:03 AM

Could be the HPOP could be a low pressure oil pump... Could be nothing more then glow plugs... One step at a time.

Thanks....I'll have him jumper the gpr for 30 seconds.......and check the hpop level and go from there then.......explain one thing though......could it still be glow plugs if it is fine the next day if he starts it ? I would think a glowplug issue would be there as soon as it cools off...he says it has to sit for extented periods for it to do it
