bad fuel milage... help...

I have a stock 01 7.3 that when I bought it 4 months ago it was getting like 14 mpg... lately it has dropped down in the 11-12 range... what do I need to look at to get this back up higher? I will be getting a chip in the first of the year but until then what can I do?

fuel filter and oil change is the first two things i'd start with

gijohn45 12-04-2010 11:03 AM

oil was changed about 2000 miles ago... and was going to change the fuel filter monday...

winter blend fuel will drop mpg. mine is down to 20-21 now. i was getting 22-23.

There are many vendors on here that can help you out. My thoughts would be, combined with Bobcat67's suggestions, are a good intake (I run a K&N), and free flowing exhaust (I run MBRP 4" duals, but there are many that are ALOT cheaper).

flo-pro makes a quality system for the price in my opinion

Flo-Pro is a great system! I ran one on my '96 til I switched it over to stacks. If I remember right I paid just less than $300 for a simple turbo-back.

drops in fuel mileage can be caused by a few things. like mentioned above, winter diesel will yeild less mpg than your standard diesel fuel. also dirty oil , dirty fuel filters , and dirty air filters dont really help things either.

if you've noticed a lack of power as well , you might want to check on your up pipe gaskets, air to air leaks , or possibly even brakes seizing on.

it is the Winter diesel that is causing your drop in mileage. Does your truck get a little more idle time to warm up before u drive?

gijohn45 12-05-2010 11:36 PM

I let it warm up before I drive off... the air filter was changed when I changed the oil (about 2000 miles ago)... and I kind of lied... it does have an 4 inch exhaust with a turbo muffler...

If it warms up tomorrow (not likely due to snow) I will be looking at the fuel filter.
