oil cooler leak???????
 
i have an oil leak coming from my driver side, it started last winter when it got really cold then when it warmed up it stopped like the seals swealled up, no its cold out its doing it again, it looks like its coming from the round cylinder right below my manifold, im told its the oil cooler??? this hard to fix?

Nope its pretty easy. Remove the inner fender well. Move the steering shaft. Two bolts that hold it to the timing cover and three in the rear. Get a new cooler assebly from Ford. Make sure you lube the seals real good(two on each end, if they rip on install you'll get coolant in the oil) and you'll need a shop press to put it all together.

so its probably worth the 65 bucks to have it done, since the seals are gonna cost me right around 55? then pay ta have it pressed together

You do not need to use a press to reinstall it. Just a little bit of weight and it pushs right back together...:tu:

On a Super Duty, you basically only need a 10mm socket with a short extension and a drain bucket (since you'll lose a couple gallons of coolant).

There is a gasket on each end (one on the front adapter to the front cover and one from the rear adapter to the block) and 4 o-rings (two blue, two green).

On a 95-97, loosen the driver's motor mount, and use an engine hoist to lift the left side of the engine a little. The cooler goes in and comes out the same way as the SD trucks.

I've done so many that I've gotten them down to about 35 minutes start to finish.

so do i need to replace the gaskets too or just the seals? about how much oil will i loose? what do i use to lube the seals just fresh new oil?

You will have to do the gaskets as well. Nothing major, just aluminum plate with rubber seals around the orifices.

You have to take the oil filter off. You will lose about 2 quarts.

I use "assemblee goo" (transmission assembly gel) to lube the o-rings.

so the cooler just pulls apart and pushes back together? and yes great pictures, so just pull the inner fender the steering shaft and oil filter?

Yup... Its a pain to get apart sometimes, but if its leaking it will be easy.

You don't have to pull the steering shaft, either.

Just the oil filter and the block heater (or plug if you don't have a block heater). I pull the block heater to drain the coolant first before pulling the cooler.

Then there is nothing in your way besides the 5 bolts holding the cooler adapters to the block/front cover.

I got all the o-rings and gaskets from diesel o-rings.com super fast shipping and a good price. 3/4 smakes with a rubber mallet had mine apart.

okay so i had my oil cooler seals fixed , and well it got done ta bout 29ish last night, and well theres more oil dripping off oil filter, with those seals being new and the truck not plugged in would those seals shrink untill they got warmed??

Should not leak... Check to make sure you tq'ed it right and wipe it off. Could be some left over oil.

i didnt do it, i had an amish repair shop do it for 80 bucks, i had it done monday and havent had a problem until this mornin when i seen it dripping off oil filter, and i noticed on the oil line where it connects in to the hpop the plastic piece that you use to get the line off is broke off, will that hurt anything??

okay now ive talked ta the guy that fixed my seals, and he said that he though my oil cooler was bad because it was leaking oil, so im asking how exactly could the oil cooler go bad or is he blowing smoke up my a**

i have a 2000 7.3l with 110k on it. what are the odds of the oil cooler leaking so bad it literaly splashed my whole under unit black with motor oil. i investigated the leak because i seen a big puddle of oil after driving it one night. it leaked 2 gallons of oil driving 14 miles back home. or could it be some other engine/seal/gasket failure?

Sounds like a HPO leak, not an oil cooler. You would have to blow a seal to leak that much out of the oil cooler.
