Thinking of buying an excursion

How much torque can a stock auto trans hold? Would a valve body help? They didn't make a manual ex did they?
How well will it tow compared to my cummins? The cummins is modded quite a bit and pulls my loaded car trailer up any hill I want at 75 in 5th gear with tons of pedal left.
I think with the excursion, I'd do a programmer , and exhaust/intake of course. What would that get me power wise?

Stock 4r100 can hold about 550-600ftp of tq... A valve body will not change that much but will give you better shifting.

No manual tranny on the Ex

It will tow fine, but you can not compare a modded cummins to a stockish 7.3

300hp is about all you will get without doing turbo or injectors.

Its twice the rig as your cummins, more room, better seats, better interior, better axles...

Thanks for the answers.
so how hard is it to do injectors on a 7.3? I don't mind doing them, htey're just quite a bit more expensive than on my 5.9, and i'm sure not as easy to install!
And, what about doing a turbo? Aren't they underneath a bunch of stuff on a 7.3?
I guess that'sone of my real concerns; the cummins is so accessible and easy to work on, I will miss that.

Yeah, i really don't need a pickup truck, i need the room and convenience of a big SUV, but still want diesel power. If i need to haul anything, I have a 23ft trailer.
the EX seems perfect! I don't know about better axles though.... My D80 and D60 seem as bulletproof as they get. I"m sure the Ex axles are just as reliable though.

YES, they made 6spd excursions but they are VERY rare and sell for a ton. An intake/exhaust/tuner 7.3 will hold or even pull on a 12v with intake/exhaust/fuel plate/boost elbow. Add some sticks to the 7.3 and it's really mooovin.

You CAN get 6spd excursions; I've seen them. But they sell for a friggen fortune.

yes sticks are more expensive for the 7.3 than the cummins because the 7.3's are heui driven; they are much more complex. They aren't TERRIBLE to install but they take some time. The 7.3 is a bit more of a bear to mess with the turbo than the cummins; the 7.3's are towards the back under a few things.

The ex has Ford 10.5" rear axles, and 4x4 ex's had dana 50 front axles with 5,000lb gross axle rating.

no... they never offered a 6 speed excursion. period. If you have seen them, they are a conversion. Never offered from Ford.

No, it was never offered by Ford Motor Company.

Please dont post things you do not know about...

The 99-00 Ex came with a Dana 50... After that they all came with the Dana 60 front end.

19psi 11-04-2010 06:39 PM

so 01+ actually has a D60 front end. Cool. Not really a fan of the D50.

Just to stir the pot some more, what about the 6.0 EX. Will that trans handle more power?
HOw bad is that engine, really? I hear all the horror storeis, but mostly from cummins guys.

Do these PSDs need aftermarket lift pumps like the 24v cummins does?

I love my cummins, but i'm not a cummins guy, if you get what i mean.
I don't care what name is on something or where it was made as long as it does what I want it to do.

A 05-07 Excursion would be the cats Meow... The 6.0 is not a bad motor, just need to stay away from the 2003 MY and once you have one do a EGR delete, and some head studs.

The 5r110 is a tough SOB, better then the Allison IMHO.

19psi 11-05-2010 05:45 AM

ok, so no 03 6.0. good to know.
head studs...... do i have to pull the body? may not be as big of a deal on a regular truck, but on an ex....
I've heard good thing about that 5r110, so that's definitley a plus.

CSIPSD 11-05-2010 10:05 AM

I dont know if you could do studs on a 6.0 with the cab on... Its tough but doable on a 7.3...

85_305 11-07-2010 09:34 PM

csi- seems your right; I've seen a few 6spd excursions for sale, and non of the owners bragged about the 6spd being a swap, so I figured it was a rare option. As far as the d50, I've heard ALL 4x4's had the d50 front. Dunno about the d60.

The 6.0's aren't bad; egr and headstuds and they are solid motors. No, psd's dont need that lift pump crap like cummins.

I understand you though; I LOVED my cummins, but I'm no dodge fan. I love my ENTIRE Ford.
