Does it just get hard to turn or just stop turning? Pump noise change? Foot on the brake?

powerstroke3487 08-26-2010 01:43 PM

it just gets really hard to turn doesent make any diffrent noise that i can hear and still does it when i am off the brake and even when giving it a little fuel

I assume you have checked the level of the fluid?

Might try changing the fluid, it might help, might not.

Any added play in the steering wheel?

yea the fluid level is fine havent tried changing it and it seems to be about the same amount of play in the wheel

Hello everyone. I am having similar problems, and mine even has made a popping sound a few times, then it acts as if the power part of the power steering goes away. I have changed the fluid and it did it again. Does this sound like the PS box as well? Mine doesn't appear to be one direction when the power goes out. It has went out a few times now, then comes back. The popping has only occurred twice, both times stopped and starting slowing. Bad gears or valves in the box? I have checked the linkage and everything appears fine. I bought the truck new and occasionally felt a slight grind or rough spot in the steering, but it never really amounted to anything and was rare. I am thinking that was the start of this problem. Please help diagnose. Thanks!

To me that definitely sounds like it could be in the box as well. I really don't think it'd be the pump they typically whine and groan. I'm not overly familiar with the box one these trucks as I haven't been into one.

Does anyone have break down or pics of the guts of one?

Turns out it was a universal joint on the front axle on one side. This made it feel like power steering issue, as it was binding up.
