Has anyone replaced a rear main seal?

I had to take my pickup in for the cruise control recall and while it was at the dealership they did a safety inspection and found my rear main seal to be leaking. They said the motor has to come out to replace this seal and the quote they gave me with parts and labor was over $2000 for the job. Has anyone else had this problem, is this something that could be handled at home if I buy/borrow and engine hoist? How much work is involved in pulling the motor out?

i did one on a ford 300 6cyl and it was easier just to pull the motor. Im not positive but you should be able to get at it if you completely remove the transmission. but its not goin to be fun to pull the seal out and install the new one if your cramed in a tight space. There will be A LOT of work pulling the motor.

To be honest I would question there diagnosis, Main leaks are extremely rare in our trucks...

Check in the valley for oil leaks around the turbo and HPOP first.

Could be leaking from the turbo, turbo pedestal, EBPV rod, HPOP, HPO lines...

If it is the rear main, yes, the best and easiest way is to pull the motor. Its not hard to do, just set out a weekend if youve never done it.

I think they are wanting to make some money. Check the valley probably oil just running down back of engine and they are just jumping to conclusions to make a buck.

I took it to another dealer for a second opinion, and he said that it is definitely not the rear main seal leaking but it is the "high pressure oil pump non-serviceable plug" causing the oil leak. The quote for replacing the high pressure oil pump was nearly as high as the last one, those pumps are rather expensive.
