acts like it is running out of fuel

Hey I'm a new diesel owner, so i dont know alot about them. I have a 01 f250 that acts like it is runningout of fuel went the fuel gauge is at 1/4 tank. I know it is not out of fuel because it will only take 15 to 16 gallons when this happens. When more fuel is added to the tank it cranks for 30 seconds then fires up and runs like nothing ever happened. any suggestons would really help. Thanks

I would start by checking the pressure the pump is putting out. I assume you bought the truck used... Fuel pump is under the truck on the drivers side frame rail. Someone may have added a pre pump filter right there and they get plugged, and what you are experancing is what happens.

Past that, its time to drop the tank and check the pick up and see if its blocked with crud. I would bet you have a weak pump or a pre pump filter on there

ok thanks i will check that out when my wife gets back with the truck. how much presure should it be at?

Normal pressure for a superduty is about 50-65... anywhere from 35 to 70 will not effect the way the truck runs over all.

You can hook a gauge up to the water drain valve if your good, clamp it in a few places and then open the drain with the gauge attached.

Does it only do this when you let the tank get down to 1/4 or below?

shag5969 02-20-2010 08:33 PM

ya only when it gets to just under a 1/4 tank. other than that it runs perfect.

Your mixing valve in the tank is picking up air at 1/4 tank. There is a part of the mixing chamber that will become hard and deformed and sits right at the 1/4 tank level. ITP Diesel has a nice kit that will eliminate all the bad stuff in the tank or you can DIY, search on "in tank mod" otherwise known as the Hutch Mod.

I did a DIY years ago and have a writeup you can find in my Sig line.
