00 7.3 Engine Replacement
We are getting ready to replace our 2000 7.3 engine with a rebuilt long block. It has lost almost all compression in the #8 cylinder and is blowing blue smoke like a freakin misquito fogger! I was driving it down the road yesterday and all of a sudden it died so I guess it's time for a CPS again also. I was wondering just how difficult it will be to remove the engine without cab removal. We need to remove all of the coolers and radiator anyway just because they are so plugged up with grass seed from driving through the pastures. We have a very nice shop with a large quantity of tools. I have done a lot of mechanic work on gas vehicles and even rebuilt several gas motors, but have never replaced a diesel motor and have only worked on them very rarely doing minor work. I was wondering if I will need any special tools to get this job done? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys, C.J. |
I am not sure on pulling the motor without removing the cab, but I think it would be fairly simple to jack the front of the cab up if necessary to gain the clearance you need.

i'm not too familliar on this but couldn't you remove the rariator crossbar support at the top (i think my dodge has this) to gain more forward area to pull forward and then up and out..... just a thought....

The motor sit under the windshield cowl similar to how the 3rd gen Dodges do. However, the 7.3 is much bulkier and and even with the support removed I think you are going to need a little clearance.

you do not have to pull the cab. Remove the radiator, cooler and all and she will slip right out the front. I haven't done it myself but i have seen it done. Pulling the cab requires that you have a lift to hold it up and if you have that, it's definately an option and would give you plenty of room but you don't have to.

7.3
It is super easy. Take the rad, intercooler, ac condensor out and remove the cross bar that is over the intercooler and take it right out the front. Dont even have to lift it that high.

I'd like to see that done. Take some pics and post your progress. Maybe give some hints as you learn, that'll help out the next guy that has to pull a 7.3. Just a thought... Sixpack
