HYPERTECH

Hey guys I'm looking into adding A porgramer or chip to my truck. I know from reading other posts that this subject has been talked about lots. I do not want to start anything but I truly do not know anything about truck computers nor car computers for that mater. I was at A 4x4 shop today and they sugested A Hypertech Max tuner. What do you think? Sam

Do LOTS of reading and research on this site. There are a lot of guys on here that know a LOT about what programmers and chips work and what ones don't.

I can't help you much on a 7.3, I have not experienced a lot of aftermarket gear on them.

If you need any help on any of the mechanical/electrical systems on the truck, I can help you - I'm a Ford dealer diesel tech.

Welcome to the site and best of luck with your search.

FWIW - I would try and avoid tuners that involve sanding the PCM board down and installing in the side of the PCM - I have seen that style of tuner cause a LOT of problems.

The hypertech pluges into the Diognostic port under the dashboard. I'm just trying to get A feel on what everyone thinks of it.

if it was me i would not waste the money on any over the counter tuner. do it right the first time and get a custom tuned chip. there are many to coose from and no wrong choises. what works for some may or may not work for you. im really happy with my wildman but next im thinking about trying beans or swamps.

I hear you! I'm not looking to set any land speed records though. Just A little better fuel mileage and better towing. I've allready spent way to much on her now. I want to order A new GT 500 Shelby mustang in A couple of mts. Can't spend all my cash on the truck now can I. LOL. :U::U::U:

Wether your looking at cost or not, get custom tunes. Its made for YOUR truck. An off the shelf one is just that, off the shelf that will work on anything. Think of it like medicine. Theres over the counter for everybody, but specifically for you you get a perscription. Your truck will thank you in the end. :U:

There are a lot of dealers on this site that can help you out with whatever you need. A lot of them have banner ads at the top of the page.

Hope this helps!

I have run about every tuner and programer out there for the 7.3, from Superchips, hypertech, bullydog... to TS style chips with DI, TS, TW, DP, Elite... I am running Swamps right now and love it. They are powering most of the fastest 7.3's out there...

What are you looking for to begin with... Just a little boost in power without really doing much, or are you looking for more?

First thing you need to do is get some gauges, Pyro, boost and tranny temp. Then a good intake and exhaust system and your good to go.

The only issue with installing chips on the PCM is when

A. People do not remove all the silicone and then have contact issues...
B. People going guns out on it and removing all the tin...
C. People messing with the chip with the keys in the ignition...

If your going to install a chip for the first time you have to remove the PCM and clean the J3 port... very easy and takes all of 30 minutes...

BUT... before you do anything, unhook the batterys and remove the keys. I do not unhook the batterys anymore, but after about 30 chip installs, you just learn your way.

I have allready installed gauges, cold air K&N intake, and A summit 4" stainless steel exhaust. I really just looking for A little more power and better fuel mileage. Not looking to go extravagent. I plan on A shellby GT-500 this spring. I also have A 23' DONZI that I play with! LOL.

just to add my two cents to this hypertech from what ive seen on my friends 6.0 was nothing special and as far as bully dog goes it puts out some power but its not evenly destributed through the powerban. i would personaly stay with a ts or something along that line. hope that helps you out, good luck man:c:

I never really researched it much, I just know that I've seen all kinds of weird concerns due to ratty contacts at the chip, or like you said, some people get a little overzealous by using like 40 grit paper. lol

:humm::humm::humm: Well, If I do not like the HYPERTECH, I'll find A costum tuned one. LOL. :s::s::s:

:jump::jump::jump: Well, I installed the hypertech this morning. I have to say that so far I'm very impressed! I set it up for 100 HP. Lots more power!! Fuel mileage way up so far. Of corse I have to fill her up this weekend and see for real calculation how it is. My turbo boost went from 18/19 to 24/25. My pyromiter temp incresed from 6/700 to just hitting 1000. She will burn the tires off now! LOL. I'l drink to that!:c::c::c:

The only thing I'm wondering about is when it read the DTC codes I only came up with one witch was P0603. I looked it up on the net and it stands for "Powertrain Control Module Alive Memory (KAM) Error. I did have the batteries disconected for 4 days last month while changeing the oil pan. Anyone out there know what this code means?:humm::humm::humm:

Below is a TSB I found from Ford on the code you saw when starting to load the programmer.
Our units always check DTC codes prior to loading as a precaution.
The P0603 is a check sum error found when a file is not reported correctly.
If you have any problems or get this DTC code again when you try returning to stock let us know and we can have the engineering department process an "external flash read" to evaluate your stock files if needed and assist.

FORD TSB :

TSB Number: 17571 NHTSA Number: 10008134 TSB Date: February 1, 2004 Date Added to File: July 22, 2004
Failing Component:
Electrical System
Summary:
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble codes P0603 (powertrain control module keep alive memory error) or P0605 ( powertrain control module read only memory error).

im just curious how much you paid for your hypertech, ive done a lot of research on programmers and it seems as though you can get a custom tuned chipped and have a cheaper price and better (fill in the blank with anything) than any over the shelf programmer. 400 dollars max can get you that and more. and im assuming you paid more then that for a 100hp hypertech... if it was new. just trying to help!

I have found out from ford that this code comes up when the batteries have been disconected for A whille. Since Im had the engin out of the truck to replace the oil pan, The power was disconected for A few days and the error code came up.
