how can i fix a turbo surge

i have a early 99 7.3 and when im on the throttle and at about 1000 to 2000 rmp at a constant speed it surges it only does it when it is cold out. i am wondering if any one knows any cheap and easy way to fix this

Thanks Guys

Its not surging, its the EBPV (Exhaust Back Pressure Valve) closing due to the low oil temp and the air temp is low.

If you leave it running after about a minute it should idle up and then the EBPV will close, making a hissss sound. Same thing happens when your driving.

About the only way to stop it is to let the truck warm up fully. You can also unplug the EBPV under the turbo, but that is not the correct way to do it.

thanks it doesnt seem like my truck warms up enuf tho becaus eit normal wont go away at all what should i do about that

I also have any early 99 and I have never had or heard of an early 99 surging. I think that your problem is also ebpv related like joe said. I usually never drive mine when its cold I usually let it run but this is the first winter Ive had the truck. When mine high idles and I touch the brake it quits high idling. Not sure about that opening the ebpv back up though cause mine is on a switch anyway. I didnt think it closed the ebpv while driving cause I though I read something about it hurting the lifters not exactly sure.

if i unplug the EBPV will it hurt any thing or is it ok to do that cuz it never goes away

Kyle_KleinSS 11-11-2009 09:10 PM

I think it will be fine mine is basically "unplugged" cause its on a switch so the pcm thinks its not there. If the noise persists after maybe its stuck?

ok thank guys

Where are you with that trailer ? Obviously not here

jake 94 11-27-2009 12:55 PM

anyone have pictures or anything to tell me where to unplug that i have the same problem in the mornings

robammerman 11-27-2009 11:29 PM

Underneath the turbo. It should be the only wire in the area.

tcyr1316 11-28-2009 11:24 PM

Mine is a 2000 f 250. i think this is the same problem i have. by under the turbo do you mean between turbo and engine?? i cant see any wires there. i do have a red one on the drivers side all by itself...is this it?

Yes, under the turbo, its on the turbo pedistal... The red "wire" is a red line, it runs boost pressure to the turbo wastegate accuator when the PCM requests it.

ok thanks:c: dumb question will that help if it is unplugeed?? im confussed on that issue:humm:

The red line? or the EBPV?

12vcummins96 11-29-2009 01:16 PM

u can remove it and replace it with a frezeplug

tcyr1316 11-29-2009 02:30 PM

sorry the red line. I have seen on some threads people said you could unplug that line. I do want some easier fixes for problems and will work up performance as money allows but I also want my baby to last. Still trying to find the balance between performance and reliability. I am such a newb! :argh:

CSIPSD 11-29-2009 03:04 PM

un pluging the red line and pluging it over one of the IC boot bolts is a common mod that might give you a bit more boost, does it help any... doubtful, but so long as you stay under 28-30# boost you should be fine.

tcyr1316 11-30-2009 07:45 AM

OK I will try that. I havent seen my guage read above 22-23 on boost. Thanks

is this the EBPV???

CSIPSD 11-30-2009 02:03 PM

The wire behind is... Not the red line...

tcyr1316 11-30-2009 08:02 PM

10-4:tu: I will unplug it tonight and see what happens.... The red line I am putting over ti IC post. Do I then need to cover where it was hooked in?

CSIPSD 11-30-2009 11:55 PM

The wastegate canister... No, dont worry about it.

tcyr1316 12-01-2009 08:10 AM

Man I appreciate the info....34 degrees this morning and she fired right up with no surge the entire time she has been running!!!!!!:jump:

CSIPSD 12-01-2009 01:23 PM

Allow more time for warm up now... That valve helps the truck warm...

tcyr1316 12-01-2009 03:58 PM

I figured I will allow 20 mins each morning...Is that enough??

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

By the way... Unplugged the red line and hoocked it on IC boot....Guages showing 2-3 psi more boost I am maxing out at 25-26!! Not a whole lot but it is more Thanks!!!:tu::jump::c:

codiesel 12-03-2009 10:59 AM

took off the red hose to the waste gate and it gave me 2 to 3 more psi out of her and disconecting the ebpv and the anowing hissss like a jet is gone

Thanks guys
