7.3 psd won't heat up?
I have a 2001 psd that i replaced the thermostate, waterpump and gave it a raditor flush. The engine over heating problem is cured now, but now the engine temp guage won't budge after 30 min of idling and a 12 mile trip. I felt the radiator hose it was luke warm, there is no heat coming from the heater it blows cold air. Any help is greatly appreciated...tony:argh:

Wouldn't hurt to check the t-stat and see if it isn't stuck open.
I just installed a new one, but i will double chec it. Do think this would cause the heater not to work also? Reason i ask such a stupid question is the heat stop working before the engine started over heating.
yeah check that thermostat, just cause its new dont mean it works right. Seems like alot of people been having problem like this with Dodges not just the Fords. It would have something to do with your heating problem too. if the anti freeze isnt warming up then there aint no heat exchange in the heater core to heat the cab. the only thing that worries me is that you said it started when the overheating problem started:humm:
With a stuck open t-stat, you got full circulation. Hence the extremely slow warm up and a cause for excessive wear on the engine.
recheck the thermostat by pulling it and dropped it a pot of boiling water,It opened when removed and allowed to cool it closed...:humm: qny suggestions?
your radiator cap on tight??:humm:
Low coolant level, both hoses warm/hot coming off the heater core?
radiator cap tight.... Coolant level is full top hose gets semi warm It's not hot to the touch. The heater core hoses are cold not even warm, The A/C hoses actually have frost on them even when the control button is on heat mode. Could a bad control panel cause this? [ still the engine should heat up]

Try blocking the front of the radiator with cardboard. Also, keep the heater fan on low.

Did you put the right Thermostat in??? I'm not trying to be a smart:moon: Read below.
I've had to go directly to a Ford dealer because the other chain stores will often cross referance to the 7.3 International shorter style of thermostat. If they gave you the wrong one it will be too short to seal off properly and never warm up. Full flow hot or cold.:ok1: |
Rechecked the thermostat against one from the dealership TOTALLY DIFFRENT it was shorter, no burp hole, and had a heaver spring w/tight coils. Changed to one from the ford dealership.
The engine heated up [gauge did'nt move] went to put water in the resovior and notice oil mixed in with the water, pulled the oil dip stick oil looked fine. Even changed the oil no water in it. I put 2 bottles of radiator flush and let it idle for 30 minutes drained it put in fresh water still oil droplets showed back in the reservior. Engine now over heats. WHAT'S NEXT? :argh::argh::argh::argh |
How hot is it getting?? Headgasket maybe, how many miles and is it stock, modded??
Flush may have finished the head gaskets, as noted above. When the engine is fully cooled down, remove the cap, and top off the system. If coolant flows out while turning over, head gaskets are leaking.
the coolant does push back, when the engine is running. So i just purchased another engine with 160,000 miles. My plan is to install this engine and have the other rebuilt. Any recommendations for perfromance/durability is appericated. also thanks for all the help in this thread....tony
