what is the difference in....
a 99 ford powerstroke and a 99.5 ford powerstroke? just noticing a few things listed for 99.5's and didn't know what the difference was
thanks Benjamin |
This has some pretty good details.
The TheDieselStop.Com 1999-up FAQ Also I'm 100% sure on this so don't quote me, But i think the early 99 had non-wastegated turbos and the 99.5^ did. But Like I said. I'm not sure. |
i think the pre 99.5 had different injectors and the smaller 15*hpop but im not really sure, im probly wrong lol
|
i read over that and i noticed something odd.... on my passenger valve cover there is a label that has 1999 and it shows BHP @2700 rpm being 250hp. why would that be? i'll take a pic of it when i pull the v/c off to check the injectors again.....
|
my 97 says 215hp
|
I think the differance is the 99.5 came with a bigger GARRET TURBO !!!!:ok1:
|
i have a late 99 and ive heard diff turbos no wastegate uhm....crap i dont know....
|
my turbo says garret on it and it has the wastegate actuator (well i think it did kind of behind the turbo close to the firewall w/a hose coming off it like my Dodge)
|
so i pulled the V/C last night to check the injectors that are bad...... this is the passenger side valve cover.

I'll Check on my buddies 99 and see what his says. His is supposed to be a 99.5 becuase it has a build date of April of 99 however when he dot his DP chip the guy sent him a 99.5 file and the truck didn't run right. Turns out the computer on his truck is from an early 99. Go figure. I'm still not sure whats up there. Whats the manufacteror date on your truck? It should be on the tag on the door jamb on the driver side.
|
i went and looked and it has been wiped off like some one was cleaning the door seal and that 1/4 of the sticker isn't readable..... i guess i can go to ford and get them to pull the VIN and give me all that info....

So then could you pull the turbo off a OBS PS and put it on a newer one then for a little increase?
|
its not worth the hassle, they a little different in style.

I copied this from another site so I cannot take credit for the info, or say that is exact.
Early 99 has a wicked wheel in it from the factory. The early99 has 120cc(AB code) injectors and the late99-03 has 140cc(AD code) injectors. The early99 IDM operates at 110V, that late99-03 operates at 120V. The early99 has 2" intake runners. The late99-03 has 3" intake runners. The early99 turbo has only 4 mounting bolts on the compressor housing. The late99-03 turbos have 5 mounting bolts and reinforcing ribs on the compressor housing. The early99 has a 15* swash plate HPOP. The late99-03 has a 17* swash plate HPOP. The early99 has one glow plug relay. The late99-03 has one glow plug relay and one air intake heater relay side by side. Both relays are on the passenger side valve cover toward the front of the truck. The early99 does not have the AIH like the late99-03. The early99 has a totally different air filter that is not inter changeable with the late99-03. But you can put the late99 air cleaner assembly in the early99 truck. The only two aftermarket air filters that work on the early99 are the AFE stage 2 and the AIS. The early99 track rod has smaller mounting bolts than the late99-03. The early99 has shallower rotors than the late99-03. The early99 has shorter hub-bearings than the late99-03. The early99 front axle U bolts are square where they go over the spring pack. The late99 U bolts are round. The early99 has a different pitman arm than the late99-03. I believe it is the same as the 1997. The early99 has no indicator light showing that "cruise" is on. Late99-03 has a cruise light that will come on when you set the cruise control. Some early99 truck has the light in the dash already. A newer PCM(Yes it will plug in and will run better too) must be used to make the cruise light illuminate. It is a green light on the right side edge, half way up. The early 99 does not have the trans fluid routed through the radiator. The date the radiator changed and trans fluid was routed there was Feb 2001. The early99 through mid 2000 had a horrible cup holder(we call it the cup thrower). The early99 flanges and collector will work with the late99 up pipes to convert it over to the late99 turbo assembly. However, the early99 and late99 flanges and collector are not interchangeable with each other. |
i checked the build date of the truck and it was 4-14-99
the date on the valce cover said Feb 8 98 i took out AB injectors and put in AD injectors. runs better now i have a bad exhaust leak..... |
the OBS turbo wasn't better -- the OBS and 99 wheels were more in-efficient.. the "wicked wheel" is not as efficient as the 99.5 -03 turbo wheels.. which is why it is sometimes given as the "cure" to turbo surge, because its not pushing as much air thru the turbo... although it usually requires a larger housing, and not a different wheel to actually cure turbo surge in these trucks..
another difference that comes to mind is the up pipe on the drivers side has a "foil" insulation on it on the later model trucks, and not on the early model trucks.. this is to dampen the turbo whistle (along with the different wheel) as Ford was receiving many complaints of it being too loud |
