I'm getting me my first Powerstroke tomorrow

found a DEAL (at least to me) on a '99 extended cab, f-250, leather, power everything, short bed 4X4 w/ 127K on the clock

the only problem is it has a rough idle and doesn't have much power. i am thinking it might be the valve cover harness for the injectors as he had someone scan it and it showed 2 injectors misfiring on the passenger side. he believes it needs injectors. truck cranks right up, no coolant bubbles, no excessive blowby, there is a little oil leak from what looks like the pan gasket.

what do ya'll think it may be? i've had 2 friends w/ 7.3's that has had the valve cover harness come unplugged (one had it happen twice on his). one friend told me it could be the cam position sensor.

what are my options on things to check? i should have the truck home tomorrow evening so i'm gonna pull the passenger side valve cover first and see what is in there.....

99 the major valve cover issue was corrected. The 94-97 with the two plugs burned the connectors and then made it sound horrible. Its not a CPS, the truck will either be dead and no start (no tach movement). Or you will be driving down the road and the truck will intermittently die... And then start back up, horrible feeling. Could be valve cover, but im thinking injectors more than likely. Still, I live the 7.3 and when you get your issues worked out you will too. Not the fastest truck, but very reliable. If it is injectors, get a good aftermarket set, they will wake the truck up! :ok1:

the 2 friends that had this happen to theirs was in a 99 and a 2000 7.3 trucks, one was an f-250 and one was an f-350.... i knew about them burning up in the earlier years but what about just coming completely unplugged inside the valve cover? that is what theirs did....

Benjamin 10-10-2008 08:29 PM

so if it is the injectors what might cause these to just go bad? improper fuel filter change intervals? red fuel?

who makes either a stock replacement or a MILD upgrade that won't break the bank? i'm not wanting to make monstor power with this truck. it will either be a DD/ tow truck for my 96 Ram....

liftitlly 10-11-2008 12:15 AM

Never heard of them coming unplugged. The heui injectors go bad, not sure why (just like common rail ones do). Probably cause there are moving parts in them, not just pop nozzles. They arent as bad about blowing injectors on the 99+ p-strokes, but they do. There are many different manufactures of injectors, but as far as cost, RDS (Rosewood Diesel Shop) are far less than others I have found. I had a set of RDS Stage 2A in my 94, and OMG the difference. 334hp 657ft/lbs dyno :rocking: with just intake and exhaust. It was like 1000 for a set of 8, you cant buy 8 stock ones for that.

stkdram55 10-11-2008 12:18 AM

The oil not being changed right might have something to do with the injectors going out too, since they are oil ran but that is just my $.02 one of those FS2500 oil filter jiggers help out the PS guys alot more than any other diesel:humm:

you can get stage1 full force injectors from tony wildman for $850, i would go ahead and have him burn you a chip for them also if you buy them.

It would be 1250 for a 99. Just going with that I liked my RDS injectors, but I was happy with my wildman chip, so I would trust him as well. You will love how much injectors wake up a stroker!:U:

slowtowpig 10-11-2008 06:17 PM

it was a night and day differance

...benjamin remember, you can always look back to the august issue of 8-lug at my tech artical on changing out the injectors:pals:

ya ya ya..... i bought both valve cover gaskets today. i did one, the passenger side, and it seemed to idle a little bit better, found a boost leak, corrected that and it had way more power in the upper rpm's as it pulls like a raped ape from 2500-3k. i'm gonna let her cool down and after supper maybe change out the driver side for S&G's.... i did notice a new injector on the passenger side.

oh ya i freikin hate working on a 4x4 now since i am so use to my lowered 2wd dodge......

Letting the air out of the front tires makes it a little easier to work on 4x4's. As long as you have an air compressor.:humm:

ya an air compressor is on the :":got to get:": list..... have a toolbox full of air tools, 3 impacts, 2 die grinders, air drill, air hammer, 2 air ratchets, and no source of hot air except for my wife....... i was able to park it's nose right up to my deck so that gave me a foot or so lift to work on it.....

Benjamin 10-11-2008 10:57 PM

yup sat in the bay while doing the driver side gasket. a friend of mine has one of those step things and it is a life saver.....

anywho back on topic

valve cover gaskets are new, under valve cover gasket harness tested out ok on an ohm meter. skip is still there..... it clears out and runs great at anything over 2500......

i have a friend that eats sleeps and breathes 7.3's so i might take it to him next week. he has a perty high HP 7.3 that is sitting on like 40's or something like that..... he's suspose to be puttin it on some 52' or some crazyness like that and still drive it on the street.......

oh ya and blowing an intercooler boot off almost makes my wife crap herself....

Benjamin 10-11-2008 11:00 PM

oh ya and i can't for the life of me figure out how to work this fancy 4X4 on this truck..... can someone give me a quick how to cause i can't get it to even go into 4low....

your hubs have two settings, auto and lock. and if its not working you have a vacuum line thats not hooked up or a relay.

to get it in 4 low you have to be in neutral, and have your foot on the brake. o yea and stopped

i'll have to try that and see what happens..... i suspect a relay is bad as the lights on the dash don't come on at all for 4x4

Benjamin 10-12-2008 09:09 PM

changed the oil and filter, changed the fuel filter, added Power Service Diesel Clean, did the TPS adjustment on it, still idles funky...... oh and it won't go into 4low like stated above..... must have a bad relay or fuse somewhere.....

gonna call my friend tomorrow and see if i can take it to him next week.....

slowtowpig 10-13-2008 07:20 AM

i wanna say the relay is behind the glove box, my buddys psd go stuck in 4wd at the boat races one year and thats what the problem was.

Benjamin 10-13-2008 07:57 PM

cool cause i looked in the fuse box and the numbers stop at 37 under the hood and the 4x4 relay is number 41 i think...:argh::argh:

hopefully i'll get back in town with enough time to put it on a MODIS and buzz test each injector and see if i can find a bad one.....

Blue01F250 10-24-2008 09:44 PM

Welcome to the PSD family Ben!!! Sorry I haven't been around much, been busy as hell!

I'd give Tony a call for nearly anything you need! Also, see if he can get you some Swamps injectors.. a buddy of mine has them and loves them -- they are 170/(can't remember - 30 or 40 I think) single shots.. your stock injectors are split shots and put more of a load on the stock hpop.

if you get injectors that are too large, the hpop will not be able to keep up no matter what shot your injectors are...

hope this little bit of info helps!

and if you have any ?'s about the Swamps injectors, PM White Buffalo (Rich) on the heartland, he can fill you in... I'll be seeing him this comming weekend (Nov 1st) @ Thunder Valley Raceway in Noble, Oklahoma.

Benjamin 10-24-2008 09:50 PM

i bought AD replacement injectors as mine had AB's in it. after finding a boost leak and a HUGE exhaust leak it runs like a stocker now. so now it is time to bomb.

Blue01F250 10-24-2008 10:00 PM

Intake and Exhaust and Guages - then Chip...

after that you'll likely need a transmission... lol, or to at least upgrade the existing one

then i'd spring for some injectors and a small turbo upgrade.. (if you have forged rods, then you can go farther, if not, you are pretty limited with PMR rods to 400 HP or less)

not too worried about the intake really. i might get one. exhaust is numero one, then gauges, then a tuner and then prolly a 6.0l intercooler. the tranny has been rebuilt and shifts HARD and locks up perty dang firm. alot harder than my buddy's stock tranny. i need to pull the inspection plate and see if it has a billet converter or a stocker.

and i got to get this 4x4 to work.....:argh::argh:

Blue01F250 10-25-2008 06:33 PM

ahhh, you already have some trans work - lucky you!!!!

the intakes are easy to do... just do the Tymar type.. I even know where to get one with an AFE filter that is as big as the donaldson and other paper filters... is a nice setup... but on the 7.3's - a HUGE restriction is the intake.. your EGT's won't like you.

but sounds like you are on the right track! the trans being beefed up is a good thing!
