Default Topping up coolant when unsure what type of coolant is currently in the truck?

2001 F250 7.3

Hey guys so I bought my truck about a year ago with a newer rad.

It appeared to be the regular green coolant so I questioned the previous owner. He assured me that it was the proper coolant for the 7.3. The previous owner did take care of this truck so I believe that whatever is in there is OK for this truck.

Here’s the problem. The truck has developed a slow coolant leak and I really need to top up the overflow bottle for now as it is too cold to do a flush and repair and refill.
Can I simply top off with Red ELC? Is there a coolant for these diesels that looks like the regular green stuff? Any ideas?

Thanks for the help

When I had to replaced the radiator on my 2013 FORD F-250, I called PRESTONE & they told me I can use
  • For use in all makes and models of cars and light duty trucks
  • Compatible with any antifreeze/coolant, regardless of color
  • Good for 5 years or 150,000 miles
