Intermittent missing and CEL until warm.

I recently just bought my second diesel truck, my first was an '03 F350 6.0 but needless to say I learned my lesson about the 6.oh... My "new" truck is a '01 F250 2wd with 184k (Bought it with 180,600) and I haven't had any problems, other than the CPS, up until a couple of days ago.

I live on a street that goes uphill and I parked on the street facing uphill without realizing I only had around 1/8 tank of fuel, well I went out in the morning to start it up and it seemed like it was out of fuel. I then pulled the cap off of the bowl and realized the fuel went to the back of the tank so I went and grabbed my diesel can and primed the bowl, put the cap back on and dumped about 4 gallons in the tank which was enough to start it. I didn't realize until I got to the filling station a few miles down the road that I hadn't tightened the bowl cap enough and diesel had been spraying everywhere under the hood so tightened it up the rest of the way.

Everything was fine until the next morning when I started the truck up, it started up normally within about 2-3 seconds of cranking and idled fine. About 5 minutes after I took off I got a CEL and the truck started missing, not horribly but enough to shake the truck a little and get me worried enough to turn around and take my truck home. Then the CEL went off and the missing stopped, then it started back up about 30 seconds to a minute later, it kept coming on and going away until I reached EOT and after the truck was warm there wasn't any problems . Every morning I'm having these same exact problems, until the truck reaches EOT I get a CEL and intermittent missing for about the first 10-15 minutes of driving and then it's fine for the rest of the day.

I don't currently have a scanner but I'm ordering AE this Friday. I'm thinking it might be the IDM or UVCH but I don't want to just start throwing parts at it, any ideas?

Could be an ICP sensor or IPR as well

I'm going to pop out the IPR and clean it later in the week when I get the time. I know the ICP harness is covered in oil so I'll probably be replacing the ICP when I clean the IPR.

Pop the plug on the ICP and see if there is oil inside the plug. If it is it needs replaced

Yea it is, that's what I mean by saying the harness (plug) was covered in oil.

Might try changing that first. I had one do the same thing to me

I unplugged the ICP earlier when I started up my truck after it had been sitting for about 8+ hours but there was no difference in the missing until warm except that the CEL stayed on the whole time until I turned the truck off and reconnected the ICP, at which point the truck was already warm so I didn't have any more problems. I'm going to order a new ICP and harness from RiffRaff on Friday. I'll probably drain the HPOP after work today and clean the IPR.

I was thinking also that maybe the filter cap isn't 100% tight and some air is getting into the bowl until the ring swells enough to seal? Ford only had one of the filter caps without a slot for a ratchet drive on top in stock, so I'm having to use the hammer and screwdriver method to tighten it.

I didn't get time to pull the IPR today but my problem seems to be getting worse, it's starting to miss off and on whether it's hot or cold.

I got it fixed last night! The problem seemed to be air in the fuel system that wasn't getting purged. I know there wasn't any junk in the fuel bowl because I had rebuilt it with a kit from DieselOrings when I first bought the truck and I checked it the other day when I ran out of fuel.

With the truck running I started draining the fuel bowl from the petcock. I drained it for about 5 seconds, then let the bowl fill back up and repeated about 10 times. The truck immediately cleared up and CEL went away and I haven't had any problems since.

I went and picked up a new filter from the Ford house this morning and didn't have any problem with the truck running when it was cold. After work today I drained the HPOP, pulled the IPR and gave it a good cleaning also ordered a new ICP and harness from RiffRaff.
