powerstroke PROBLEMS

just bought a 2001 7.3 f350

it wont start when cold (glow plugs?)
runs like sh*** when it starts have to let it warm up for like 20-30 mins before it will do anything

puffs blueish white smoke under throttle and is very hesitant at low rpms ive been told its an injector

the truck still runs good but is very under powered

turbo is spooling good and is stronger in the upper rpms

any help will be greatly appreciated this is my first powerstroke

Cold staring problems sounds like the glow plugs or it could be just the glow plug relay. On top of the engine in the center is two relays. You want to get a screw driver and go to the relay that is the second one back out of the two closets to the firewall and on the two big studs on it which wires are on put the screw driver on both making a connection between the two it will probably spark don't be afraid to hold it on there and hold it for about 10 seconds get right in your truck and start it if it don't wait for the wts light if it fires right up chances are the Glow pugs are bad.

As for the white / blue smoke.. White means there is air in the line or a bad injector if your injector is bad usually it will make a smacking or knocking noise pretty loud like something terrible is wrong. But with the injectors you have they are unit injectors which run off the oil pressure which get pretty pricey and its probably best to change all 8 if u can afford them and all the gp are right next to the injectors under the valve cover

Hope I helped ya out let me know if u have more questions

Bad sounds when u start it but not always. And are you saying to cross that relay then start it immediately without waiting

And how would I attempt to get air out of the line

Yes cross the relay then get in and start it immediately like a gas vehicle bc that would manually turn the glow plugs on and on the 99 -03 powerstrokes they have unit injectors they pressurize the fuel through the injector th fuel pump will bring the fuel through the bowl and into your head it sits there in a fuel duct (it's the same concept as a water jacket but it doesn't go anywhere except in your injectors. The reason I'm telling you all this is because there basically is no way to bleed your system just make sure the fuel bowl is full and then drive it and it should clear up even if its running rough

And if its blowing white smoke alot and or making a pinging noise or knock sound while your driving you probably have one or more bad injectors but if its air drive it like u stole it and hammer down that's the only way to get the air out

Main 3: Any codes? Full of oil? Noises?

Taking a quick guess, I think you have HPO issues not fuel issues. the only real way to air up a 7.3 is to either A run it out of fuel or B have lines/injectors out then its only aired up till you work it out which Im betting you've laid into it at least once already. Wouldnt be an every day thing like was being said above. The rookie is talking 7.3IDI talk about a Powerstroke

Powerstrokin7.3 02-12-2013 09:00 PM

Yeah could be oil pressure bc the fuel system runs off it but not if its blowing smoke and making noises like he said abd was already told once it was a bad injector and I never once said It would be a everyday thing driving it like that it was clearly said untill the air is out. Sorry but this is talking powerstroke.

What was previously said has absolutly nothing to do with a 7.3 idi fuel system seeing how it is completely different.

thanks i fixed the problem buy selling the truck for a profit,I bought another one though and has been diagnosed as #8 injector failure it is also a 2001 7.3 4x4!

I've heard that number is known for failure and that a AE code injector will fix this problem

My new question: is this true or will the exspensive injector fail the same as a cheaper one?

the symptoms are alot of blue/white smoke and you can hear the injector knocking on driver side

turns out my engine had a dead cylinder, anyone know what the engine is worth complete

caedo 03-22-2013 10:25 PM

I have bought a couple of engines out of ambulances with roughly 100k on them for $2500-3000. Idk what one with a dead cylinder is worth. Probably 4000 minus the price of an overhaul.

Yeah might be able to get between 500-1000 I'm guessing
