2000 7.3 transmission issue

OK I am going to try and describe this issue to the best of my knowledge ( which isn't much ) and to the best of my ability. My truck is a 2000 7.3 XLT, It started up fine this morning, went to the store, and over to another store. It drove fine as it always does. Got back in the truck ( which is an automatic btw ) It started just fine, and when i hit the "go" pedal the engine had high rpms but no go.. so being not far from home I limped it home.. When I got home it would not "click" into D 1 2, reverse works just fine it has all the power it normally does. It will "click" into 1 but acts like it has no real power in the gear..
I checked the trans fluid and its red not burnt or discolored in anyway. I stuck my head under the dash thinking it was a cable or something.. nope not that either..
I am out of ideas.. any help would be amazing .. thanks

I had a similar problem few weeks ago.. i rolled up to the stop light and went to hit the gas and wouldnt go. i threw it up in park shut it off and started it up and threw it back down in drive and went about 15 ft and it just wouldnt go again.. acted as it was starving for fluid and was free spinning.. so had to get it towed back to the house. The fluid seemed fine in mine too but from past experiences i know now to change the filter out before i do anything else. Lucky for me the filter had trash in it and solved my problem. Its a very simple process if youve never done it before. just drain the fluid out, drop the pan, change filters, bolt the pan back up, then fill her up with fluid. Hope this helps.

I had the exact same issue as jrsherherd yesterday with my 2000 F350. 126k miles, no problems with slipping, shifting, etc before this. Just happened from a stop...felt like something was spinning but not catching (when it first happened, I thought I had slipped on some ice.) I limped to a parking spot and towed to the dealership...waiting for them to take a look on Monday.

Yea i didnt have any slipping or any signs to make me think somethin was up, but it went out. Just changed the filter and i was good to go. But oooo stealership is gonna cost a pretty penny. hope you both figure it out with minimum cost. best of luck to yall.

how much ATF does it hold vs how much you have to re-add?
With it being new years I will go tomorrow and and buy a new filter.. but ATF is quite expensive at 7 a qt, I dont wanna spend 140 for 20 qt's if thats not gonna help anything..

Stroker815 12-31-2012 01:23 PM

20 quarts is for full flush. I think it might be 6 quarts that the pan holds but if you buy at auto zone or somewhere like that just ask them to be sure. all together with the filter and fluid shouldnt be no more than $60. and IF it does fix your problem then id wait a could weeks and change the fluid again to try and get the rest of the bad fluid out.

jrshepherd22 12-31-2012 01:25 PM

makes sense.. i changed it give or take about a year ago..
its not cloudy or discolored or burnt or anything..
but ill give it a go and see what happens.. it sure would be cheaper than a new trans..
at 1500-1800 for a rebuild..

DenverMike 12-31-2012 04:59 PM

Looks like I'm getting a rebuild. Had it towed over to a specialist after Ford said $3800 for a new transmission. The more I read about it, sounds like Ford supplies a rebuilt transmission anyway...from the lowest cost provider...but charges the highest price.

jrshepherd22 12-31-2012 05:04 PM

I just changed my filter and 6 quarts of fluid no change.. reverse is strong like always.. no D 2 1 ... nothing at all..
when i dropped the pan, there was about a copenhagen cans worth of metal shavings stuck to the magnet.. i assume the bands are burnt out of it..

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Right at the holidays.. i just dropped ...I dont even know how much.. new brakes front and back new shocks front and back and new tires all the way around.. and new steering stabilizer .. and now poof the trans is trash..
i still wouldn't drive anything but a powerstroke .. 7.3

Stroker815 12-31-2012 09:12 PM

I hate that for both of yall. But it's always better to check the filter before hand. And yeah it don't get no better than the 7.3s. But shepherd once you get all the problems out that 7.3 will go forever.

Bummer about the transmission, BTDT

If you live on the south end Denver I'd recommend Kimmer Transmission and Gear (Jordan and Arapahoe). He rebuilt my transmission with a beefed up torque converter, upgraded valve body, and a better warranty than the Ford Dealers were offering for a either the same price, or slightly cheaper. And he did the work in 3 or 4 days. Highly recommend.

jrshepherd22 01-01-2013 12:41 AM

I agree.. the 7.3 too me is as bullet proof as they come.
the Cummins is the dominate motor to have around here.. there is not a powerstroke guy for miles .. but you can throw a rock and hit a few cummins guys no problem.
my claim to fame is my 7.3 is bigger than your 5.7 haha
I had a quote to rebuild my trans the other day from a guy, he said 1500-1800 for a rebuild.. to me thats better than buying a used trans ( 950 from the local junk yard) just for the fact I know if i have it rebuilt i know its new inside.. and thinking about asking him to upgrade her as much as he can without breaking the bank..

i had my tranny do that a few years ago i was driving down the highway and it was like it kicked out of gear i could limp it back home tho. i changed the fluid and it worked for a week or so. then went back out did that about 3 times then took it to a shop it was dont for the pump went out and messed the whole thing up. the transmissions in these cant take horse power if u go over stock be ready to buy a new one i went with the suncoast so i hope i never have the problem again

Thanks, Homer. I took it into Budget A-1 Transmission on Santa Fe/Dartmouth and had them start before I read your note. After some haggling, they beat the Ford price and upgraded the Torque Converter to an HD version. 2 years, 24 month warranty (they wouldn't go 3 years without upgrading all the electronics...but I didn't want that cost.) We'll see - hopefully this is the one and only transmission repair I do.

I have read this entire thread. I have the same problem with my F-350 7.3 transmission not working. Fluid is great and looks clean. Transmission filter replaced. Transmission solenoid kit replaced. Analyzer says no problem with transmission. electronics - no warning messages. It will only go in reverse. Any recommendations before going into transmission?
