Over heating on long pulls in the mountains
 

Ok here is a wuick run down. I am trying to talk myself into a newradiator fixing my problem. I never had this heat situation until I replaced the trans cooler with a 6.0L cooler. Now the trans temps are perfect but on long pulls I start heaing up. Just trying to tell myself it is the radiator and not the added heat from the bigger trans cooler. Also hoping it is not the injectors starting to give me problems. After the ambient temp has dropped I can pull the crap out of it and never make engine heat. So sound in if ya got an idea. Do you have a water temp gauge that you are monitoring or just the dash gauge? What is the temps if you have an actual gauge?

no water temp guage. brings up a good point . guess I will add one now. Thanks for the input...... I have had this truck for a long time and pulla fifth wheel and a goose neck trailer. that is about all I drive it now days. I have put 110,000 miles since I have had it and never has the temp guage moved very much once it is warmed up. but this summer every long pull with the 5th wheel up the guage would go. Sill trying to narrow it down.

It could be as simple as a failing thermostat...

You would think by now it would have done it empty when I am thrashing the crap out of it on long pulls. I just pulled a F-450 on my gooseneck and never cut it any slack at all and it never moved the guage???? This started on vacation back in June.

it could be a few things could be a thermostat, could be a dirty air filter, try flushing the coolant. if none of those work then replace the radiator. my buddys cummins had the same problem turned out to be a dirty air filter and dirty coolant. sometimes you need to wash out the old radiator to get some of the krud out. give it a shot before you drop alot of money on a new radiator

You would think... You would also think a radiators job is fairly simple. It either does the job or it has a hole in it or is clogged or has damaged aluminum fins and fails to do the job... I have a feeling your problem is elsewhere...

I would start with a t-stat, but i have also seen the water pump impeller be slipping on the shaft and can be hard to diagnose this cause problem may only show up when working it hard. would flush cooling system and t-stat first though.

I would find out what the temp IS before doing a damn thing...

Right now you have a feeling your truck is over heating... You dont know it is.
