what kind of horse power can stock head studs handle?

read this in another thread that the 01s-02s had powder coated headstuds that were weaker than normal whats the max hp can they hold? i want to go a step up with injectors and turbo nothing crazy just yet the motor has 262k on it so i dont want to put alot of hp through it till i rebuild it when i do i will put new cryo headbolts . i haul 5k on the weekends so i want to put bigger injectors and turbo to help me pull a bigger load

You are mistaken with the rods... Pmr's were in the 01+ trucks which stand for powder metal rods. The head studs are fine until you start running higher than 40ish psi boost pressure. This will come when your knocking on 500hp with hybrids and a larger turbo. That's when its time to upgrade head studs. If your truck does have pmr's, you will not want to push more than 450-500 hp. Even those numbers can be iffy on some pmr trucks...

Stock has head bolts. They are not studs

AC injectors with 100% nozzles.

Install with a TS chip with single shot tuning.

Enjoy.

okay great thanks guys saved me alot of trouble. i know this is a dumb question i know that ford put a 20 psi boost limit on motor . if i got bigger injectors and turbo how can i get around that or will a ts 5 pos fix that ? im new to upgrading diesels thanks

CSIPSD 08-07-2012 09:27 AM

There is no 20psi limit on the motor...

At about 22-25 psi the PCM cuts back fuel because it thinks there is something wrong.

Some tuners disable this, or you can buy a boost fooler from RiffRaff Diesel (I'll link to it in a bit...).

oh okay thanks

Riffraff Diesel: OCR - Overboost Code Regulator

articfox 08-08-2012 05:59 PM

awesome thanks doesn't look to bad to install

fordornothing 08-08-2012 06:49 PM

or you can go to napa and pickup a air limiting valve, kinda like a regulator. it's meant for ait tools such as a spray gun to limit out put pressure. i put it between the boost sensor and the map sensor. it seems to work fine.

articfox 08-09-2012 09:40 PM

question on the rift raft part can i set it to allow a certain psi? i know on some of them you can set a psi limit

fordornothing 08-10-2012 05:57 PM

theirs is already set at 22 psi.

articfox 08-11-2012 08:34 AM

i ment when i installed the rift raft part i dont want to let the psi get up to 40psi and brake the rods

CSIPSD 08-11-2012 10:49 PM

You will not hurt the rods due to 40psi of boost pressure. Keep in mind cylinder pressures can reach 3000psi...

The RiffRaff map fooler just keeps the PCM from seeing over 22psi so it does not defuel.

fordornothing 08-12-2012 11:17 AM

i don't think you could get to 40 psi with a programmer and stock injectors.

articfox 08-12-2012 09:52 PM

i mean when i upgrade my injectors and turbo i plan to do that in the future

CMCA Swartzkrautheim 08-13-2012 08:40 AM

the boost fooler will not cause that, youd need a wastegate or a very very controlled foot...

articfox 08-13-2012 05:59 PM

i will make sure i get a good waste gate when i buy my turbo
