chip vs. tuner
Hey fellas,
Im new to the diesel world and have a few questions. Im currently getting 13-15 mpg and believe me Im light on the pedal (taking it real easy). Ive always heard that diesels are better stronger and cleaner and even better mpg. Believe me after only owning for about a month I see this is true. But, I gotta figure out why my gas mileage isnt that great. No pullin the week i tested my mpg. My 1999 f250 7.3L has a chip in it that gives a permanent 60 hp and when switched gives 90. Ive had it off (or at 60). Ive got 5" exhaust, pretty sure stock intake, no gauges other than stock. Could someone point me in the right direction to getting better mpg while maintaining or even gaining performance. Thanks, Shaffer86 |
Chips or programmers kinda give that on the fly change in power, tuners are more pernament. from my experice with 7.3L is that tuners get the best MPG. Is your truck Lifted at all, and is this city or highway, if thats city then that sounds about right for a 7.3L

Its not lifted...thinking about putting a leveling kit on the front end. But, its a mixture between highway and city as I drive highway everyday to and from work.
Thanks for the info do you have any tuners that you would recommend? |
AN SCT programmer, or an Edge Evolution, but the SCT has an Economy setting, my friends 99 gets 24 mpg highway with stock tires.

If you are recommending an SCT you do not know what your talking about.
A TS 6 position chip is what you want with custom tunes. They are far better then any SCT or edge ever will be. |

That's why you don't run canned tunes custom tunes are in every way better then any SCT or edge ever could be And I find 24mpg hard to believe

I should say that the truck is a short bed, with a alunium flat bed, what we hand calculated when we went to kansas. and came back.. But put in you oppinion I put in mine not here for a piss fight...

Haha ok fellas thank you both for the inputs..i have heard good things about the ts 6pos-chip but im worried about the hp being too much for the truck. What would i need to do for the truck to be able to handle more horsesafely. Has 5" exhaust ..stock intake..new leaf springs and shocks but i think theyre just stock. Maybe just a little beefier. Thanks again for your responses

Maybe an intake? Without injectors it won't be that much increase in HP
