More horses without a motor BBQ?

I am thinking of buying a '96 3/4 ton ford diesel running with a 2wd manual. Bone stock everything. I am told it has 215hp running this setup right now. How can I get it up to around 235-250hp? I do not want it if it will blow the motor. I am thinking of a cold air intake from AFE, a 3 inch downpipe, a straight pipe exhaust, and maybe a small chip as long as it won't fry my tranny. Is this a good combination? What would be a good chip that won't barbecue the motor or tranny?

all that stuff will get you there easy. I wouldnt really worry about blowing the motor if its in good condition. As for a chip get a TS with custom tunes and you will be good:tu:
BTW how many miles on the truck you are looking to mod?

As long as you add gauges you will be fine. Its always a gamble with the trans though

You will be fine...

An exhaust and intake are supporting mods not power mods... They will not gain you what they claim to gain you.

Get yourself any TS based chip. The chip will get you 50 horses or so and put you into your goal range.

How much will the chip you are talking about cost me, and how is it installed? Is it something I can do myself, or is it one of those things I am better off paying someone that has experience? BTW, the truck has 28X,XXX miles because he used as a daily driver and for hauling occasional project cars on a 16 ft. bumper pull trailer. He bought it when it was between 2 and 6 years old when he was a carpenter. The truck is only 2 grand because it needs tires, a starter, new battery's, and a new windshield. I also get a half a tank of diesel with it and some aptai s chairs that I can sell here on the forum or on Craigslist to pay for the starter. I also plan on the chip, exhaust, intake, and downpipe. I also plan on pipe bumpers, floormats, spray in bedliner, A-pillar gauges, toolbox, seat covers, floor console with bbbbbbiiiiiiiiiigggg cup holders, pioneer stereo, and a few other things. It is a good truck with a very straight body and good motor and transmission (that is what the owner told me, but I'm not about to take his word for it). Thank you all for your advice. Anyone else?

A chip will cost between 3-500 bucks depending on where you get it. Definitely a do it yourself thing. You have to take the computer out through the drivers side inner fender. Take it apart and clean the connections. Then you can reinstall the PCM and then come in from behind the ebrake pedal and push the chip on. Run the knob to wherever you want it and install that. Good to go.

i got my TS from advanced diesel and im happy with it

I'm happy with mine too, and make for sure when you install it that the connection is nice and clean

97powerstroker 04-14-2012 10:14 PM

And unplug your batteries!

Thanks everyone! Anyone else have tips or advice for me? I also heard of a problem on the OBS ford trucks that is a part for less than $50 that I should keep in the glovebox that takes about 15 minutes to install. I think it is some kind of sensor, but I am unsure if that's what it is.
