What kind of stacks?
 

I am thinking of buying a '96 ford 3/4 ton diesel from my neighbor, and after I fix a few mechanical gremlins, I want to install a straight pipe exhaust. I do not know whether to go with the normal exhaust system with a straight pipe and chrome tip, or straight piped stacks. What are your opinions on this? I do not want anything really small, and I do not want them high above the cab. I am told I can get some good sized stacks from a semi junkyard for about $100 (More or less). What do you all think would be the ideal thing to do? If I get stacks, what would be an ideal diameter with a deep, throaty sound?

If you go with stacks, you'll want to run them up a ways so you don’t gas out your horses/livestock. Had a truck driver tell me about the first time his buddy hauled cattle. Had short stacks on his truck and fumigated the whole trailer, had to buy and dispose of the load. That's heresay, but I wouldn't want to risk it on my own livestock. Standard exhaust should allow adequate clean airflow to 'em without any concern.

Stacks are personal preference. If you like em, who cares what we think... I personally had purchased stacks but decided against cutting a hole in the bed and wasting bed space... If you do run them, I wouldn't go much higher than the cab height. They look dumb when you run them up more than 4" of the cab in my opinion. Either way you go, it will sound fine.

I had a stack in mine for a while. It was cool at first but got old after a while.

i have a stack on my reg cab and it was cool for the first two months then it got to loud i cant talk to the person siting next to me or here my radio but i am buying a 4in duel exhaust but thats me

I love my stacks but I had to do modifications so when i pull my three car hauler . I have a exhaust ranunder the truck to so I don't :edit: my cars up

I had stacks on my 01 and if you get stacks and are worried about the noise if you get turn out stacks or bullhaulers it will be a bit less noisy in the cab than with straight cut offs or mitre cut. but like the other guys said its your truck do what you want and like

Technically, it is not my truck yet, but I hope I will get to say otherwise soon! I did see a system on a sled pulling truck that would switch between his stacks and his regular exhaust to pass inspection so he could still drive it down the road at the flip of a switch. Would any of you know what it might run me to do a system like this? It would be a handy thing when I have to haul occasional cars, furniture, hay, horses, and my dog. I think I saw it in diesel power magazine.

I had a single stack in mine but like said before it got to dam loud so i went to a side pipe dumping in front of the rear tire, its still loud but not nearly as bad as the stack but hey there is nothing wrong with stacks i think they look really good in obs trucks

I am leaning more and more towards just a straight pipe without stacks, unless I hear any ideas that give me more reason to go with stacks.
