can anyone please help me with my engine problem?

i have a 1996 ford f 450 7.3 diesel i had the engine rebuilt about a year ago it has very bad blowby but it still runs ok sometimes it just quits sometimes or ill be driving and it will loose all power and the check engine will come on and i can turn off the key and start it back up and it will run for awhile and do it again, then sometimes it wont do it. i changed the filter, cleaned out both fuel tanks, put new cam sensor on today and it runs but at 2000 rpms and above it has a miss but not at idle. it dosent show any codes, im at my wits end with this truck, its my work truck and i have to have it to make a living i need help fast can someone please help me out?

How many miles are on the truck? Stock fuel system? Original injectors? Sounds to me like the miss would be that you had a down cylinder, most likey a bad injector. i check fuel pressure and see what you have right past the fuel bowl to make sure the system is funtioning as it should and if so i would lean towards injectors. Good luck

check the stupid little pressure sensor on the side of the fuel filter housing they tend to leak or they will give a faulty reading to the computer. happened on my first 97 7.3 this part is in stock a your local ford dealor aproxx $30-40:scare2::scare2:

i probably have about 30,000 on a rebuild motor with what was told to me as all 8 new injectors but i have blow by so bad it looks like the truck is on fire....and the sensor your talking about i checked today and its not leaking but the wire that gose into it was broke and i spliced it back together but the plastic end is cracked and i have a twist tie holding it on....but its been like that for awhile now. what about the icp and ipr sensors what do they do?thanks for all the help.....i'll never buy another diesel....i put 8,000 in the motor and it has never ran right and the guy who rebuilt it wont answer my calls to fix it he wouldnt even give me the writen warrenty he promised....i got screwed i dont even think he put new injectors in like he said either.:argh:

id say that more than likely you have a down cylinder, the guy that did your rebuild sounds sketchy so it wouldnt suprise me that he didnt put in new injectors, id say start testing injectors, to solve the down cylinder. What filter did you change also? and when you first start the truck for the first 20-30 seconds does it kinda have a lope to it?

well not to disgust you anymore fix it the way i fixed our 2:jump: a 94 f350 w/a 5.9 cummins adapted to the ford 5speed and the wifes truck a 88 f350 with the 213hp cumming and a 727 w/a divorced 205 t-case hers has all the interior out of the 92-97 and the front clip as well i just converted mine (the 94) to a 4x4 dont know if your auto or std butyou can get all the parts and pieces at your local salvage yard dont bother to buy the motor mounts a few pieces of flat plat and you can save $269.00. bothof our trucks are getting phenominal feul millage mine 22.9 mph with 410 ratio hers 18mph with the 38's she is running. DONT GET RID OF THE TRUCK JUST ASK YOUR SELF WOULD YOU RATHER BE CUMMIN OR STROKING the 5.9 first gen 89-93 can be bought relatively cheap off line and the conversion only took me aprox 48 hrs to complete:humm::scare2::bat: not to knock the 7.3 but i never got a good one myself two injection pumps in different trucks in the same week:scare2: not worth the $2,800.00 to fix the 7.3 in my opinion so i put the dodge 5.9 in both of the trucks:tu:

check the valve cover gasket, the plugs on the outside and the UVCH.

JIsaac12 11-24-2011 03:04 PM

On second thought I agree check on top of your valve cover and there are several clip in plugs that will effect the engine, if they come loose the engine will drive but has little power and shakes as acts as if multiple cylinders are down. They are bout 1 inch long oval shaped plug

dont say never buy another diesel because you got a bad one, you Injection Requation prussre sensor can be bad. When you say blow by are you talking about the the blow by hose or the exhaust pipe.

fordornothing 11-24-2011 04:19 PM

:humm: Injection Requation prussre sensor what is that? the OBS are known to short out at the plug and knock out a few cylinders. on my 99 the plug under the valve cover came partially unplugged and took out cylinders 1 and 3. also, the main harness lays on the drivers side VC. check for chafing on the wires right there. make sure the bolt in the main plug is tight too.
