oil leaking
 

hope everyone is having a great fourth of July weekend!:) so my dads 97 is getting an oil change in the next week or two. over the course of the last 5, to 10k he started developing a slight oil leak, approx 1.5qt loss for every 4k. its literally only leaking from where the dipstick inlet tube goes into the oil pan. looks like its some kind of "thread in pan" fitting. so in my mind I can break it loose probably replace an o-ring behind there, and add some right stuff silicone and she's sealed right? has anyone dealt with this? I don't want to open a can of worms if it goes PIA on me.

I didn't risk it. If you drop it it will go in the pan and you have to pull the engine to get it out. I engine brighted the crap out of mine then pressure washed it then break cleaned the heck out of it and then used a whole tube of rtv around it and that stoped my leak

that's an idea that's right up my alley, the leak is slow enough too that the RTV will probably set up right

I let mine sit overnight before I did it. mine only leaked when it was running.

my 94 did this. it would just loosen up. so i just tightened it up every so often...

yea in all honesty i haven't touched it to see if it was tight lol

hey, i know this is an old thread, but mine is doing the same thing. i took the nut off, brake cleaned it really good and used some rtv on it yesterday. i'll be honest with ya, i only let it set up about 30 minutes and drove it home about 15 minutes and it leaks just as bad! should i let it set up longer or is there another alternative? i made sure i made it tight, and didn't think it would still leak. i used gm grey slicone.

i'd be careful taking that nut off. the other half could drop into the pan. but you could gey that paper ish gasket maker then use some silicone.

yep, thats my plan. i think if i let it set up longer this time, it will be ok and i got some of that gasket making material...i was careful the 1st time when taking the nut off and will make sure i'm careful again!!!!

for me I made it an afternoon beer drinking session, I went a step further and removed the starter so I that I could really get in there to clean it, not sure if it mattered but I also put some plastic and rags where the starter was to minimize moisture going into the flywheel and tranny housing. I got some of that purple power degreaser and spent probably an hour spraying, rinsing, cleaning etc. after I was satisified with the cleanliness I brake cleaned and blew air on my surface to clean and dry it a step further. I use Right Stuff silicone, (it's black) you can get it at NAPA, I use that stuff pretty religiously when it comes to sealing or attempting to seal and so far it has worked pretty good. after that I just gooped the shit outa that stuff onto my surface, gotta get your fingers in there to really smear/spread it around, I also when I was done let it set over night; Now we could argue this is kinda a band-aid fix, but ever since I did it to Dad's truck, it has sealed and been leak free ever since.
