1996 F350 wont start

Hello everyone being new to the powerstroke i am having a difficult time running my problem down. The motor will crank over fine but will not start and I am begining to loose my mind on it and dont want to continue throwing money at this. It hasnt run in almost a year and it was hit or miss before it was parked as to when it wanted to run before. Heres a list of what I have already done to it and would welcome any suggestions...

1. new batteries
2. changed cps
3. changed glow plugs and relay
4. checked oil level in engine and hpop res.
5. made sure I have at least 10psi on oil pressure for low side
6. new fuel filter and fuel heater
7. fuses are all good under dash and in engine bay
8. new ipr valve
9. checked fuel pressure at schrader valve when cranked for 20 secs and have 30 psi
10. new fuel pump

sorry for the long post but I wanted to allow you to see what i have tried to eliminate thanks for the help.

what does it do when you try to start it?

twinboys 03-20-2011 09:17 AM

Need at least 100 RPM for computer to allow injectors to fire.
Is tachometer working when cranking?
Any smoke out of exhaust when cranking?

demery 03-20-2011 03:14 PM

the tach moves and shows a little over 100 rpm when cranking and the wts light comes up when I first turn the key ok like its suppose to. and there is white smoke coming out from the exhaust as well when cranking

Do you have any way to scan it?

demery 03-20-2011 08:51 PM

no i wish I did but no one around here that I know who owns a powerstroke has a scanner for one.

joebob3093 03-20-2011 08:54 PM

well there is your problem, you need a scanner to figure out what is wrong. you threw hundreds of dollars at your pickup trying to find the problem and you still dont know what it is. where are you from?

demery 03-20-2011 09:26 PM

the only thing I have thrown at it so far is the new batteries and fuel filter and heater the rest of the parts were already with the truck when I got it the previous owner bought and never put on as he was tired of messing with it. I am near springfield missouri

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i did check the cps wiring today and all of the wires check out with the right ohm readings and volts except one the ohm reading is right but the voltage with the key on is supose to be 12 volts + or - .5 and I am only getting .75 of a volt at the sensor I believe it is a green wire that runs from the pcm

you need to take it to ford or some other shop and get it scanned. once you get the codes off it we can go from there. until then there is nothing anyone can do for you except suggest more parts to throw at it.

Starter solenoid on passenger wheel well. $20-30 Run into same problem on many Fords.

Not to be a d*ck but what did people do before scanners?, seems like you're being quick to throw in the towel

Re: 1996 F350 wont start

They had engines that were not electronic. Working on your chevy 350 or your 6BT is alot simpler then a powerstroke. There are numerous sensors and things on these engines that can cause it to not start. You have to find out what codes it has before you can figure much out.

Dude I had the same problem. It was the starter.solenoid.and F scanners!:rocking:

Why f scaners? They are there for a reason. To help you diagnose problems like this. But if you would rather spend hundreds even thousands of dollars and not figure out the problem then go ahead.

Exactly. Replacing every sensor, solenoid, relays, harness, ect. that could cause a "no start", you'll easily spend over $1000. I would rather SCAN each time, then replace everything. I can think of better uses for the money than keep a garage full of every electrical component.

CSIPSD 03-26-2011 09:42 AM

You need to get it scanned.

I'm sorry but throwing parts at a non running powerstroke is just dumb.

If the truck is cranking when the key is turned then its not a starter solenoid, come on guys.:argh:

Do yourself a favor, click the link below in my sig for AutoEnginuity and order it. Install it and get your truck running.

Sounds to me your not getting enough HPO to fire the injectors, meaning it could be a bad HPOP, bad IPR, bad Injector or injectors, something on the HPO line.

Only way your going to fix it is getting someone to scan it and figure a few things out. Buzz test, KOEO test, and then watch the Duty Cycle and ICP pressures when cranking.

97strokerHD 03-27-2011 02:44 PM

Im just north of springfield mo. There are many places to scan it. Ford, Northeast Diesel, Ferguson Diesel. And a majority of mechanic shops around have a scanner. You really need to get it scanned though.
