cheap and easy up pipes?

just wondering how hard it is to fix leaking up pipes, I saw a pair from strictly diesel was $800!!! thats way outta my price range and I heard they are a bitch to install. any input?

MossBack 02-02-2011 06:08 PM

Im not sure if ur talking the pipe is leaking or if it is the common problem of the exhaust donuts leaking at the y-pipe. Go to orielly and get 2 1/32" exhaust donut for a 70's chevy with a 350. It is pretty easy to do search for how to's and this is a good site to look into

Whichever ones you go with it seems liek the best idea is to take your donuts and pipes to a muffler shop and have them expand the pipes so the dounts fit snug. my new Ford donuts fit like crap as did the parts store GM 350's.

are they very hard to replace on OBS trucks?? I know I have to remove the turbo, I assume I have a leak because my firewall is covered in black soot. when I bought the truck the downpipe was loose so I thought that was the problem.

They are really easy when the motor is out. lol I'm just messin. My buddy did his and he said they aren't fun but he is also fairly challenged with simple things.

MossBack 02-03-2011 11:39 PM

leave the turbo in i had no problem doin it.

If your hardware is rusted up, it will be a nightmare at best.

RattleBomb7.3 02-09-2011 08:27 PM

losing boost like crazy, so I popped the hood and everything is black lol. I'm wondering if it would be easy to just replace the donuts or should I remove the pipes and take them to a muffler shop?? does anyone even make bellowed up pipes for obs?? If I'm gonna fix it I wanna do it right.:argh:

twinboys 02-09-2011 10:56 PM

I have not found any for the OBS, and I have looked high and low.:nope:

Do not waste your money on the brass donuts from Beans, they will not seal.

DZL JIM 02-10-2011 06:30 AM

Did you re-torque the brass ones 2 and 3 times when hot like they recommend?

twinboys 02-10-2011 08:17 AM

I absolutely did. When I finally removed them, they had not deformed any to seal anything. In fact they slid off the pipe exactly the way they slid on. They are exactly what Bean's claims they are..."fit perfectly and won't have to worry about gasket blow out again." What they don't tell you when they are taking your $85 is that they do not deform like the conventional donuts to form a seal.

I think you have a terrific idea about altering the ends of the pipe at a muffler shop. Have you done this? does it work?

RattleBomb7.3 02-10-2011 06:16 PM

they continue to leak when you just replace the donut because the old donut can actually eat into the pipe from heat cycles right? so should I replace the pipes too??

Guys I just picked mine up form my Ford this morning. Total bill was $297.00 with tax. Two pipes, two gaskets, 4 screws.... let me know if you need part numbers...

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Make sure you have you vin number available when you order...

twinboys 02-11-2011 11:10 PM

The OBS is in need of a better engineered aftermarket pipe/connection because the stock ones are flawed...a flawed design that is.

Yup, they just swedge the pipe a little to make the donut not slide off. Works fine.
I have the brass donuts, still sitting on the shelf. Once I saw how they actually worked (or were supposed to) I backed out.

Simple solution is to make a new flange and weld it to the up-pipe and install a section of braided flex joint into the up-pipe like these: Flex joints.. They are SS but there's no issue welding them to the stock up-pipes. I've done that before, too.

This sounds like the best find/advice/idea that I have taken away from this site. Thank You DZL JIM !

WoW, that's a great price.
What dealer did you get them from?
And what is the part number you have

Thanks!

I will have to post part numbers later...over in the back of my truck at the shop... Have your vin number handy so they give you the right parts..

Follow-up on my up-pipe replacement project on a 1998 E-350.

All the bolts from the pipes to the Y-collector required major mussel to the last thread! Soaked for 48 hours with PB Blaster.

I don't know if the bolts were cross threaded or over torqued by the last owner or what.

Replaced the Y-collector($140 and in stock) instead of re-taping it.

Would have purchased a bellowed set-up if I could have found one for my early 1998.

Thanks to all for the references to project walk throughs and tips.

Happy Motoring...
