EGT's

so the other day I took dads 97 to reno about a two hour trip, first half has hills second half is flat I was watching his EGT's and they were running between 400, and 900 never got hotter than 900, 600 seemed to be the norm, on the way back they ran at about the same with a bed full of sheet rock, so my question is in all my learning so far of the 7.3 whats considered hot EGT's for the obs? how about for the 99-03 due temps run about the same, are my temps hot or running fairly average

Re: EGT's

Im about 700 crusing. Your temps seem just fine. Red line for EGTs is 1250. Anything over that you have the chance of breaking stuff.

600 is normal for cruising, and with big hills, 900 isn't bad either.

good to hear then, is 1250 a hot number for all 7.3's or just the OBS.

All 7.3's. Getting over that for short blurps is ok, but if you pin it to 1500 and hold it there for a minute, your asking for a new engine.

My buddies old PSD was a 94. he was pulling about 12k for about an hour doing 85- 90 mph. he melted off 1500 degree paint. how is it that the engine is still good? and he has no gauges so i have no idea what his temps were at.

he had the paint on the y pipe for his stacks.

I doubt that his y pipe got to 1500 degrees. Just cheap paint.

i have 1500* paint on my manifolds and its gone now. my truck as never seen 1350+

fordornothing 02-09-2011 10:00 PM

well the can said 1500 degree. but it didn't burn off. it actually melted off.

Awesome. Fact of the matter is. I highly doubt your friends y pipe in the bed got 1500 degrees. I have my Pyro sensor in the exhaust manifold which is as close to engine heat as it gets and I have yet to hit 1500.
