7.3 engine 1994

so im looking at a 1994 f 450 with a 7.3, 5 spd. is this a power stroke, or just a 7.3 ? any good? i drive g.m. and know nothing about this one.
thanks!

if its a powerstroke itll have the powerstroke decal on the side, if it doesnt that have that itll say DIESEL on it, that means its the IDI international. i know nothing about the IDIs but i was looking at buying one a year back that had 320,000 miles on it and was still running strong.

Not true, Some 94.5 powerstrokes had the "turbo Diesel" under the badge. Check to see if the oil filler tube is in the front of the engine or on the valve cover, If in the front, its an IDI. Post up a pic and i could tell you which one it is.

when did ford start putting the powerstroke decal on? thanks for the correction. good info to know

CSIPSD 12-29-2010 10:41 PM

Its on both the 94.5 models... I think they just started using them until they run out.

I know a guy with a 94 and it has turbo diesel on the side and is definitely a powerstroke, it should be pretty easy to tell by looking under the hood, they usually say something about direct injection on em if they're powerstrokes

Mutley 12-30-2010 06:41 PM

Mine's for sure a powerstroke and it says Turbo Diesel under the badging on the side. The oil dipstick is at the middle of the passenger side of the engine. They only came with 5 speeds during that model run that I know of. Good engines.

fast4turbo 12-30-2010 07:24 PM

thanks for the help!
if the engine is not a powerstroke, than it is idi? did they still have a turbo?
i need some power as this is a rollback. but my experience with idi diesels, they are not the best choice for hauling a load :humm: i will look at it next week.

bobcat67 12-30-2010 11:55 PM

idi's kinda suck and anyone that tells you differently is in denial

Mutley 12-31-2010 06:36 AM

Yes, there were turbos on the IDI as well which I suppose could be confusing. The direct injection gives it away however.

Mine is a 94 XLT F-250 4x4 turbo diesel, does that mean it is an IDI and what does that IDI mean ?
does that also mean if it is it wont haul a travel trailer very well ?
how can I give it the power to haul a decent sized trailer ?

godblessmud 07-02-2011 09:52 PM

IDI simply means Indirect injection. Check the location of your oil dipstick tube as well as the engine badging. Under hood badging will say something about Powerstroke instead of IH.

Also for clarification these rigs were available with the ZF 5 speeds, as well as the C6 and early E4OD.

Powerstroke or not ?

Yup, the oil dip stick is on the passenger side and middle of the engine, am I stuck with NO power or could it be a powerstroke, it says nothing about direct injection under the hood . what is the towing capicity of this thing ? it did not even come with an owners manual and I just had a rebuilt transmission put in. it is an automatic. My intent was to convert it to run on WVO, any ideas out there ? I could sell it and try to recover at least $ 7000.00 for it or increase the exhaust to 4inches as recomended and put a K and N air filter on it. please give some more useful feedback. It also says on the doorjam it was made in Nov of 93

fordornothing 07-04-2011 12:33 AM

when you look at the engine, is there a black box sitting above the turbo that says turbo diesel?

godblessmud 07-04-2011 02:43 AM

:humm: Had a 7.3 N/A with the ZF5 with a 14; flatbed at a job once, had over 450k miles on it, truck had been rolled once, only maintenance I ever had to do was one starter relay and oil changes. I would routinely load 4-6 tons of grain on that truck and had no qualms about driving it wherever I needed to go. Your never going to win any races but if you want good unloaded mileage and a truck to haul crap around with on the cheap your set.
