White Smoke

When i first start it it does smoke alot, but it will still rev up fine! after its warmed up a little bit it revs up fine untill you hit about 2000 rpm and then it just starts dumping out white smoke and will hardley reach the rev limiter. Please help its REALLY bugging me!

Sounds like a problem i recently had a couple months back.

sounds like you have an injector hung open. any skip or roughness when running?

Twebb833 12-14-2010 10:01 AM

There is a video on youtube that is exactly what is happening its called "Powerstroke smoke and no power... HELP" its a shot of the exhaust on an obs powerstroke.

DieselDanBoy 12-14-2010 10:07 AM

ok wow that doesnt look good. crew cab like mine haha

anyways it deffinetly looks like your having a fuel issue, how many miles on the truck?
i had this similar problem, it turned out to be an injector nozzle stuck open, slowly leaking fuel into the cylinder. do you know if they're the original injectors or have they been replaced in the past?

Twebb833 12-14-2010 10:12 AM

there are about 240,000 im not i got the truck from my grandpa about a year ago and im not sure what he did, he took it to the shop about a month ago and they replaced some glow plugs and not sure but i think they might have gone thru the injectors. Anyways the guy on youtube said the his problem was the fuel pump bad and letting air into it or something like that.

It was doing this before we took it to the shop, we took it to the shop because it wouldn't start with out a shot of ether.

DieselDanBoy 12-14-2010 10:14 AM

ok so 240k on stock injectors.

If your fuel pump was leaking you would see a puddle under it when its running, it would leak out of the small air vent hole on the pump casing. its a diaphram pump that runs off the camshaft in the valley under the intake manifold. if that were the case it would take longer and longer to start up because you'd be purging the air out of the system. how long does it take on average for it to start?

Twebb833 12-14-2010 10:20 AM

Well i let the glow plugs cycle and just a few cranks maybe 3-5 seconds on average

Its not haveing trouble starting after we took it to the shop. They said some of the glow plugs are bad..

DieselDanBoy 12-14-2010 10:22 AM

so really it starts normal?

White smoke means either raw fuel, or coolant. 7.3's dont usually have head gasket issues, very uncommon. but a cracked injector sleeve would allow coolant or fuel to leak into the cylinder. but usually give you some major running issues like stalling and hard skipping.
IMO i think you just have an injector going out, 240k on original injectors is pretty damn good, could be time for new ones.

Twebb833 12-15-2010 09:57 AM

Ok ill check it out! I thought that the ford shop went through the injectors but maybe not!

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Do you have any idea on how much that would cost?

CSIPSD 12-15-2010 10:55 AM

Smell the exhaust... Fuel will burn your nose, coolant will smell sweet.

I would bet you have a broken injector nozzle or a lifted injector. Stop driving it, if its fuel its going to destroy what ever piston is the problem!
