Truck died and will not start
 
So driving last night my truck died. I was going a steady speed then the rpm's started jumping for about 2 seconds and the truck died. I made it over to the shoulder and put it in park. Wait to start, turn the key, only cranks...
I had a buddy pull me into a subdivision where the truck sat over night. Went there again today and still the same thing. Only cranks, no start. I do not see any smoke anywhere while cranking. Also checked drained the fuel bowl to make sure that it was getting fuel and it is.
Removed the chip and no change.
Having a hard time figuring this out.
CPS?
Can anyone help me out?

Could be CPS, could be IPR... You have access to any kind of scanner?

Yes I can get a hold of a scanner. Just havent got around to doing that yet. Unfortunately it died about a half hour from where i live. Would a scanner pick up a code if either have failed?

Not really... Here is a quick test to see if it might be the ipr...

Unplug the ICP sensor and crank again. If you start to get some white smoke, then it could be your IPR is plugged with some dirt or crap...

If you still get no smoke, I would bet its the CPS.

With the ICP sensor unplugged the trucks PCM reverts to a assumed PSI and will allow the injectors to try and fire without the required 400psi. You still may not get any smoke, but you should be able to hear the injector solenoids fire...

So I did everything you said...Unplugged the ICP sensor and cranked, no white smoke. Plugged it back in and still the same thing. I decided to go and try jumping the truck on the starter solenoid and it actually started up. I let the truck warm up and gave it a little drive. It ran perfect and smooth for about 5 minutes, then all the sudden the RPM's dropped and it was dead again. Couldn't get it started again even by jumping the solenoid. I checked the fuel bowl again just to make sure and it had fuel in it.
I am more so leaning towards the CPS now. Does this sound right? And if I am correct this is recalled by Ford on these trucks, so I think I'll have the truck pulled to the nearest dealer and have them replace it. If the CPS is the problem, it will be fixed. If it is not the problem, then I need some more help :tu:

CPS can come and go sometimes. My wifes Excursion drove around on a bad CPS for months before we replaced it.


Give her hell. Doesnt sound like the issue thou if it did not just die on you, CPS do not have a little work zone... Its all or nothing.

Is the fuel bowl always supposed to be filled to the top? Ive been playing around a bit and noticed that when i pull the filter and let the fuel from the filter drip into the bowl and fill it up more and then put the filter back in, i can sometimes get it to start. After running for a while it will die. When i pull the filter again the fuel level in the bowl has dropped, but there is still fuel. I tried this numerous times and fuel is always in the bowl, im just wondering how much there should be.

Well i noticed that the plug for the UVCH rear passenger side is melted on one side and smokes when cranking and smells like it is burning. Could this be my problem?
Any tests or anything i can do?

replace your UVC gasket, for starts... Is it the gasket or the wire harness?

Once your in there you may as well replace the UVC harness as well. if the one inside seems good, keep it as a spare.

Have someone crank the truck for you, then hook a cheap tire pressure gauge to the shrader valve thats on the side of your fuel pressure regulator. It should be at least 20psi or more. It will be hard to read with the cheap air pressure gauge, but it should give you an idea.

That's a problem. I'd replace both gaskets, all four internal harnesses, and solder in all four new external connector pigtails.

No reason to go that crazy... Clean up the external parts and make sure there are no issues, but if its just the gasket he is fine.

Your talking about $300 bucks in parts right there...

Look on ebay. You can replace everything on both sides for $160.30 with shipping. Frustration is what led me to replace everything. I do not regret it. As CSIPSD said, keep what you think is still good as a spare.

Just letting everyone know that the problem is solved...
Replaced the connection with one from the old UVCH that i just switched out and the truck started right up.
