What type of fluid would a zf 5 speed in a 96 7.3l take?

It takes Dexron/Mercon, but I changed mine over to the Royal Purple equivalent.. I made things way more quiet.. Expensive at $15 a quart, but well worth it.

I used Mobil 1 in mine very recently. Smoothes things out nicely.

Ran 2 trannys with ATF and never will do it again. Both trannys had the blocker rings go out and got stuck in gear.

Was just searching this and ran across a pdf file from ZF. Most of their reccomendations were 75-80wt gear oil. synthetic. They also stated anything over a 80wt oil would cause harder shifting when cold.

i have heard of lots of people just running ATF and never had a problem.

Full Synth ATF.

Remember, if you buy cheap oil for your trans, your not helping it any.

The royal purple has good results from what I know.
Just make sure its a full synth.
