bad shimmy when i hit a bump

ok. new found problem. a few months ago a hit a bad bump in the road and the front wheels would "slap" side to side uncontrolably. it ended up being a worn out tie rod end. i got that fixed. now it's a similar shimmy except now it feels like the whole engine and tranny are rocking side to side. and after a few seconds of that the whole truck is rocking. and the only way to stop it is to slow down to about 15 mph as fast as possible. could it be the rubber on the engine mounts and the tranny? and advice would great. thanks guys. :humm:

well im going to guess that you have a 3/4 ton PSD . If so you have done the same thing that my 95 did . its not the motor or tranny mounts its the mounts that hold the split axle to the frame look under the truck ( it will need to be raised to do this ) directlly under the oil pan their are 4 bolts and rubber mounts . A good chiltons manual or haynes will show you step by step . It cost me around 300 buck to fix mine .

sounds like u had death wobble. name fits it well dont it?

look over everything in front end, TRE's, steering box, balljoints, and axle mounts. not sure if u have the ttb front end or solid.

My 97 F-250 did that to me once in socal... years and years ago. Scared the crap out of me... Bushings was the issue...

originally from the factory it had the IFS split axle. i put a spicer 60 solid axle under it.. this is the axle with the new TRE's and a new track bar. the steering box is less than 6 months old. but when it does this. the steering wheel isn't moving like it used to. it feels like the engine and tranny is rocking. i don't know if this is related to the axle swap or not. i know a few people who have done the same thing and haven't had a single problem with it.

Steering stabilizer?

fordornothing 09-01-2010 12:40 PM

it wouldn't hurt. but it doesn't feel like a steering issue. at first it was. but i got that fixed. now it has a similar shimmy but it;s not the same...

might be a little bit of work, but pull the carpet back, take off the trans tunnel and go for a drive and watch the trans.

ok. i'll try that. i know there is a set of bumps by my house that will set it off. but i don't think i need to go that far because the shifter will get about an inch away from my knee when it's in 5th gear.
