ball joints
 

hey guys need some help i have a 97 f250 and found out my tires are towed out:argh: :humm:think its ball joints:scare2: are they hard to do on these trucks have never did them

before assuming the ball joints are bad. pick up one side of the ground. if you have play then they are bad. they aren't hard. just time consuming... i did them on my 96 350. pull your wheel off. remove auto or lock in hub cover. there is a small ring that holds in the gear side. remove that. everthing should slide out. then there is a ring with 4 notches in it. (it is threaded) then a washer with a tab on the inside. then another nut past that. not thesmall pin on 2nd nut. this needs to be aligned with holes on washer. once those are out your hub and rotor you are looking at the spindle now. there should be 5 bolts that hold the spindle to the steering knuckle. remove these. the spindle is a tight fit into the knuckle. use a block of wood and a large hammer to hit the spindle. don't hit it in the same spot. move around it. you should be able to see where the bearings have been riding at, DON'T HIT THERE. OR THE THREADS. when you get the spindle off slide your axle shaft out. there are 2 large nuts on the knuckle. remove those. hit on the stud (ball joint) the whole knuckle will drop out. repeat the same process for both sides. when you are putting it all back togehter. you run the risk of knocking out the inner seals. don't do this. you should be able to guide them back in with no problems. the uppers are a snug fit in the cup but are easily removeable. the lowers are press in. so you will need a press. it sounds harder than it is. like i said it's just time consuming. the only thing is is that since i have a 1 ton i have a solid axle. you have the IFS i'm guessing they are similar in how they come apart. but don't quote me on it.

towed out at the bottom when you are looking at the front of the truck?

toed out is usually a term where the bar that goes between the two tires is pushing the front of the tires outwards... its easy to just adjust that bar so the tires toe back in... but if your ball joints are bad it will cause all kinds of trouble....

well that wouldn't be ball joints, that would just be a needed alignment.

As previously mentioned the wheels being toed out doesn't have much to do with ball joints. I would highly recommend for you to get an alignment though as it greatly reduces tire wear.
