old smokey runs again

I just put a set of rebuilt injectors in my 96 f-250 crew cab short bed 7.3 motor I have no experiance with 7.3 or any other diesel motor but I have messed with gas all my life.Any way I bought this truck as I have always wanted this body style so in ran bad ,hard to start first I put new gp in changed oil filter, put new gp relay in new fuel filter and it ran bettet but it smoked white when started so I asked around and learned it was injectors so I put a set of rebuilt in and did not purge anything, but it did try to start it and it turned a little and stoped so I pulled gp and purged put back together , tryed to start ran battery down charged overnight this morning it started after about 3-4 tries and now it smokes like crazy and does seem to run better but it seems to still be missing, I ran for about 1 hour but it is still smokeing? what did I screw up is the real question? any help would be great.
Thanks, Jack S

Injector Washers????

As long as O'rings were installed in the right place and copper washers on the bottum of the injectors were installed..... correctly...... Then I have seen them smoke for quite a while before burning all the oil out of the cylinders..... Did ya drive it or just let it idle for this Hour.... also how much oil in the intake....... Just a fefw suggestions

jacksickler@att.net 05-01-2010 05:50 PM

I have not driven it it is somewhat apart, no bed,no hood 1 fender off, I dont understant oil in intake? the injectors came with the o-rings in place new copper washer,I also installed new gaskets/wire harness on each side. Should I let it run more or should I take it apart and start over. Not sure what to think. Thanks

I went ahead and started it up pulled out side and have it running at 1000rpm (hope the folks next door dont mind)and it is still smoking but it does start better than it did but it is still missing on 1 or 2 cyl not shure what to think? any thoughts? Jack S

Injestors

It can take quite awhile to purge the two back injectors and to burn out all the oil in the cylinders after injector replacement.. Especially if ya can't drive it.. Harder to get engine temp...... to help burn oil out of cylinders........ As for oil in intake if turbo is letting oil out it will be heavy in the intake..........

I like this site thanks for the help out there, I'm lost without sparkplugs it seems like these things are missing some parts, lol . Jack S

Will this motor have a miss because of oil in cyl or is there another issue?

twinboys 05-04-2010 08:16 AM

First, I would go to dieselmann's page then down to the powerstroke page for a little light reading. Then, while idling, I would try to bleed the air out of the oil rails by cracking open the injection control pressure (icp) sensor at the front of the driver's side oil rail, then the plug on the passenger's side front.

I suppose you could unplug each injector at the injector to find a bad miss. I've never done this myself and am unsure if there is any reason not to do it. hopefully somebody with more experience will give us the thumbs up or thumbs down on this idea (and tell us why). Keep in mind that the injectors have HIGH voltage.

You need to get out and run the motor hard for a bit to get the air out of the HPO rails... Iding will not do this.

No need to crack open anything.

Is it smoking white or blue or black or what?

jacksickler@att.net 05-04-2010 02:41 PM

Ol Smokie!

Well the smoke is not white anymore it's dark black-blue and it still misses I do think it runs better than it did but still not as it should. I have done a few hotlaps up and down the street but it's somewhat torn apart so i'm not sure jonny law would look fondly upon me if you know what I mean I could say my wife was chaseing me with a golf club but im not sure that would fly will this oil/air in the motor hurt anything and or make it miss? Thanks Jack S

Now that you have CSIPSD's attention, listen to him. Be careful running with no bed, hood, or fender. Like he said, what color smoke?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

sorry, just missed that.

CSIPSD 05-04-2010 06:59 PM

Need to get someone that can read and clear codes, maybe do a data log and watch the ICP pressures and duty cycle. Also do a cylinder contribution test and a buzz test.

Any excessive blow by?

OL Smokie

I have made some progress but still not quite there, I believe it has to do with some sensor or switch because it starts great now smokes a little and then it seems like a switch or sensor switches on or of and it starts missing and smokeing (still light color) itdid smoke dark after I started it after changing injectors, anyways I started checking sensors by unpluging them to see if anything changed and then I think I found the issue or at least one more the thing called ipr ( injector presure regulator) it is missing part of it self and it spins freely on the shaft I think this thing may make it run to rich? so I ordered a new ipr, as far as blow by I dont know how much a 7.3 motor should have but it doe's have blow by but again if it is running as rich as it seems to be I would think there would be more blow by? as far as driving it half naked I live in a rural area so not to many folks out this way if I lived in town they would have already hauled me off. Thanks Jack S

In your first statement, you said you changed the oil filter. Did you change the oil? Oil is absolutely critical in a powerstroke. Did you do the reading I suggested?

The outside of the IPR will spin freely. Is the little tin nut still there holding it on?

jacksickler@att.net 05-16-2010 08:29 PM

Ol Smokie

Hello again , I strugle with reading have a brain eye disconect of some sort so I don't read much. Yes I now have changed the oil 2 times with maybe 2 hours of running time it seemes to start fireing on all cylinders after it gets up to temp? the ipr thing doe's spin freely but the collar and the nut are gone and they look to have been gone for a long time the inside of the magnet part is worn and when this thing is running you can move the part that spins and it changes the way it runs almost like a vacume advance on a distributer? like I said this is all new to me and very interesting and frusterating at the same time.
Thanks. Jack S

twinboys 05-17-2010 05:31 PM

You need to get that tin nut on. See if it is still in the valley or get to the hardware store. I put threadlock in mine because it kept coming off. I think it was over-tightened once.
