Top end oil
 

I was watching POWERSTROKEHELP.COM - The Information Source for Ford Power Stroke Diesel Owners & Mechanics and the guy was changing the top end oil that contains 3 qts. of oil. There is a small plug located in front of the fuel filter on what I think is the top oil pump(not sure). He said that that oil rarely gets recirculated in the lower pan and can harm the injectors. Has anyone ever heard of doing this? On the website click on the 7.3L and go to injector tune up.

i have never done this or heard of it being done but it seems like a very good idea and he seems like he knows what he is talking about and it should be out there for every powerstroke owner on here to view i think thats good info and a good find :yeah:

My dad just changed his last week ,the oil he pulled out was nothing like was pulled out on the video online ,He has 208000 mile on his truck around the same on the truck he was working on ,the oil he pulled out was thin just like the oil out of the pan he runs 15/45wt oil changed every 5000 to 6000 miles. Haven't really noticed any difference in cold weather starting, fresh oil up top is still a good thing.

I did the hpop oil change myself after seeing that video a month ago. Black, gooey sludgey crap came out....disgusting. As I used Rotella, I put the same in the top with a bottle of Duralube (he suggests Prolong but I can't find a supplier up here locally in Canada). The engine purrs like a lion. I just drove it 1200 miles on business and can say the engine's running great. Just be careful that you put back exactly the same amount you took out volume wise. That guy's videos are extremely helpful and I highly recommend watching all of them. He's a pretty smart guy.

that guy is an idiot, i change mine when it need and have never had a problem. you dont need to do a top end oil change.

How does it NOT circulate through the crank case and filter then back too the injectors? Doesnt' the oil return through holes in the head then back to the block? :humm:

I feel bad for my old truck never have it before but as soon as i get back to my truck I will it can't hurt. Sound like ford wanted it to flow to the pan but a passage might be to small for it to do what it should (HD back in AMF years).

It does flow back to the pan but I reckon not as quickly as it really should...and there's about three quarts up there. What came outta mine was horrible and suggests that procedure was never done. Anything that might prolong the life of the injectors is fine with me. I can say with a lot of confidence my truck is running much better than when I got it and the only thing I did was a Rotella oil change in the top and bottom along with some Lucas in the fuel and a fuel filter change. I'm sure time will tell huh?

Ya i guess man. After reading this there is a LPOP that supplies the resevior with oil, but the problem must be on the return?:humm:
