calling all ford guroos

hey yall im not much of a ford tech and my dad has a 97 psd. this truck has a heck of a hard time starting even with the block heater going. once its fired up it sound like its down a couple cylinders for about 15-30 seconds depending on how cold it is outside. it also rolls an emense amount of white smoke. the truck is taken care of with only a downpipe done to it. had new glow plugs last year. also it gets a weird exhaust sound when starting up kinda of like the turbo is seizing up then it will "cough" and the turbo will spin back up to speed freely. is the turbo going out? thanks for the help!

see "glow plug testing and issues " in this forum. Sounds like maybe the glow plug controller.
Pull the intake tube off the turbo and inspect the compressor wheel for play and that it is spinning freely. It may even be starting to wear into the housing.

I would check your glow plug relay first, that sound your hearing from the turbo is probably the EBPV being closed to help with warm up

If you do need to change the glow plug relay i would recommend doing glow plugs but since u did them u should be ok. because i did the glow plug relay on my truck and it was good for about a month and then it went out again so i replaced both and hasnt had a problem since

can anyone tell get me a picture of the rely? i think that is whats wrong. thanks for the help. the turbo looks good. that valve for warmup must be sticking then. when its real cold out it will continually do it while driving and you can feel a loss of power like something is closing up.

glow plug relay is directly to the left and behind the fuel filter housing. flip up the cover and look to the left and behind the fuel bowl. There it is. Go down to NAPA and get GPR-109. DO NOT ask for a glow plug relay for a powerstroke, ask for a GPR-109... Its about $30 bucks rather then the $70 they will try and charge you for the powerstroke one.

Everything else you are discribing is normal. The EBPV will open and close a bit when the truck is warming up, it will even close when driving down the road.

Replace your GPR and your start up issues will go away.:U:
