What kind of pressures should I be seeing?

I rigged up a test pressure gauge for my HPOP and was wondering what kind of pressures I should be getting from the thing. At a warm idle, I am coming up with about 600psi, and she seems to top out at about 2500 psi. I just want a verification that my hpop is functioning properly.
Anybody?

where is the guage located on the engine?? do you have a stock truck (no chip) a chip. injectors etc...

crazycooter 05-25-2009 10:30 AM

well I guess we should define stock

No Chip, nothing fancy in the injectors or turbo. I put a high powered fuel pump and twin fuel filters in her. I have spent a year and a half wondering if she was put together on the weekend by gremlins... I recently had to spring for a rebuilt set of injectors and that helped, she has a bit of an exhaust leak but I can't be certain which side of the turbo it is on. She just doesn't seem to have any pep and hasn't even hit 170 k yet.

As far as the gauge goes, I put a Hydraulic quick disconnect in place of one of the caps on the hpop oil rail and have a chunk of 10,000 psi hose that will reach inside the cab and a 5000 psi gauge on the end of that. I set it up so that I could check my run-time hpop pressures and get a feel for what she is doing.

The truck runs, the HPOP is good.

What happens if the gauge fails at 2600psi while it's in the passenger compartment with you?

Just sayin.

FWIW: Your powerstroke requires 500PSI to start.

More importantly, you can tell if there's any oil leaks by the IPR percentage while the engine is running.

Does the turbo work properly?

crazycooter 05-26-2009 11:16 PM

well I guess

I don't make a habit of running around with my gauge hooked up. it is a quick disconnect, so it is easily hooked up and disconnected. I just wanted to be able to gauge what she is doing form time to time.
As far as if the gauge fails, I guess it will make a pretty good mess, but only for a really short time, as the engine will shut down instantly.

As far as the turbo, I replaced it a while back with one I was told only had 9,000 miles on it before it was repaced with an aftermarket. (my original was squealing when I shifted)

I wish I knew where the most common exhaust leak occurs pre-turbo

at the up pipes where they go into the y collector.

crazycooter 05-29-2009 12:08 AM

gimme a suggestion on how to fix that. I have replaced those doghnuts twice now.

international ones they are bellowed and work much better. Im in the same boat. they are pricey but do a search on here and u can get the part numbers and maybe a price qoute.:U:

If you have an exhaust leak pre-turbo you're not getting the full effect out of your turbo.

You have to replace both the up pipes and the dounuts at the same time. They wear into the up pipes and will not allow them to seal.

I do not believe the IH bellowed pipes are avalable for the OBS trucks but I could be wrong. What kind of boost are you making? What are your EGT's?

Your gauge is fine, a max of 2600 psi with stock tuning is good, no issues with that. When you did injectors did you notice what kind you got? Where they AA's or AB's? With a 97 they could be eather... but you would want the AB's...

AA=90cc of fuel
AB=120cc of fuel (per 100)
