1994 1/2 7.3L no start
 

Hey guys,

I've got a 1994 1/2 7.3l turbo diesel with the manual tranny.

Problem: No start

Symptoms: Crank and crank but will not fire over. Acts like its getting no fuel.

Things I've tried/checked: I drained the fuel bowl and the turned the key to run to see if it would fill back up. did not work so I'm guessing its because of the fuel pump designed on these older models? (I'm used to playing with my 99) as I crank fuel does seem to start filling the bowl again but I have no idea how to actually test that kind of fuel pump.

Would a bad or unplugged IPR keep the truck from starting? When I first started working on the truck I noticed the two wires going to the IPR were unplugged without the connector. My friend said he might have knocked those loose but he isn't sure. I fixed the connector and plugged it back into the IPR, no change in starting condition.

From a visual stand point, all the wires look good, no chaffing whatsoever. I'm going to pull the IDM and ohm all the wires associated with that today.

Need help guys, need this old diesel girl to run again!

Tested the Wires from the IDM Everything ohms out correctly. Still not starting.

Is there any smoke, just turning the key wont make fuel run into bowl on that truck, unless its been changed over it still has a mechanical fuel pump, that is why it fills while cranking and not with just the key.:tu:

Lol learned that, I'm used to playing with the later years, but now I know.

There was no smoke while cranking, I ended up fixes a few wires headed off to sensor and pulling the IPR. It was stuck open or closed or maybe just clogged? I couldn't tell. I bought a new one that is supposed to be a better design and it fired right up!

Running like its has a small cam going on, is this normal for those years of diesel?

if its running, good. small "cam" sound could be injection timing off just a little, little bit, or it could just be the way it idles, if it smoothes out when you start driving it, i woulden't worry much about it.

It smoothes out nicely once going. I won't worry about it then. Thank you for your help!

Quick question, i haven't had the time to do any research on aftermarket turbos for these things, any good ones out there? Thanks again!

There are good ones out there, best thing to do is just start doing some research, depends on injectors, intake and other mods for what you will want for a turbo. and what your goal is to get to.
