Cold start issue?

Replaced glow plugs, and glow plug relay. Kind of at a loss with it. It start but coughs up a little white smoke i the process. The high idle setting on my ts chip seems to help quite a bit though....

im having the same issue. All new gps and gpr. Wiring is all good. Had a mechanic at ford tell me that it could just be worn injectors. They have a lot of trouble starting in cold weather apparently. Mine are at 205k now. They smoke even when its warm out.
Id love to find out there is something cheaper to fix wrong with this thing!

Yeah ive got new injectors on the way. Ive also heard something about hpop not having enoigh pressure at startup? My buddy has a 95 and he just put a starter on that cycles faster so it starts a little easier. Im at a loss.

Cold start 7.3

Hey,
I would look at the injectors. If you are running 15/40 in cold climates, older injectors have a tough time until the oil heats up and thins out. Dump the oil and filter then use 5/40 synthetic Rotella.:argh:

I will definitely check that out. Sounds like it might work. The truck runs awesome..once it warms up.

Yep, I think you'll be surprised. I have a 2002 excursion with 208K. I did the new glow plugs and relay before I spoke to a old diesel guy that told me about the old injectors and thick oil. It starts like new with the 5w40 syn in cold weather

I went to 0W40 synthetic once it got cold out.
that helped some.

then I threw in a manual glow plug switch so I could run the plugs longer.
that helped some more.

then I said to hell with it, and bought a webasto diesel fired coolant heater. Known colloquially here as a "proheat". It was far from cheap, but it was worth it. the shop I used put it on a timer (I have the blessing of leaving at roughly the same time every day for work) and the truck did not take no for an answer when starting in the cold. Got the idea from a friend who runs Dodge Sprinter vans for a window company.

and then my F250 took out a deer, and that was lost. :(
