94 F250 Cranks no start

So let me preface this thread by saying that I am a newbie in the diesel world. A little history to the problem: I drove my truck to the house with no problems, loaded it up ( moving family ), got back in and all it did was "click", went to the store in the other vehicle and bought a starter and relay, put those in (had a minor spark issue "disconnect battery dummy"). Got back in and now all it does is crank (really well mind you). Getting little to no smoke out of the tailpipe. Any help would be awesome.

little to no smoke?

sounds like a fuel issue.

ok, your truck relies on the ECM to run the injectors its is a HEUI injection system. Hydraulic, Electronic Unit Injection. Your ecm take readings of multiple sensore such as the ICP(Injector Control Pressure) and IPR (Injector Pressure Regulator) and also the crank sensor you need 800 plus PSI of oil pressure and 55 PSi of fuel pressure to start your truck. Now what I would do first is disconnect both your BATTS for 15 minutes to let the ECM, and all the control moduals reset any codes, and then reconnect and try to start it. If thats a no go on the front driver VALVE COVER there is a sensor unplug(IPR) it and see if it will start the sensor is next to the HPOP the square looking deal on the top front of the engine. If that doesnt help and OBD II will be nice to have to scan the COMPUTERS.

ALSO what sparked?

Starts on ether now...BUT

Ok, so, I found a blown 30A Maxi fuse under the hood. Replaced it and still no joy. Sprayed some ether in the air intake and she fired right up and ran. Shut it off and then restarted. Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth but this is very confusing to me. BTW after she sits for about 10-15 min same no start problem unless I give her a shot of ether. Also as a side note the "wait to start light" comes on like it should but immediatly goes out? Any ideas?

eiether you are losing prime or you have a bad sensor, If you can pull the sensor I mentioned and try to start it and see if it will start up after its been sitting. If it does replace that sensor, if it does not you proably need to check your fuel pressure and your oil pressure. If you can find some one with a Snap On Verus OBII or something that actually will read sensors so you can see what they are reading and you can go a Diagnoise the problem from there.

He's gonna need an OBD1 code reader for it, and he'll be lucky to get a data stream of any kind.

My 94 gives me no data stream at all, even with a good scan tool from a good shop.

if it is a direct injected engine and the pcm has been updated then the obd2 port will work.

Slim Whitey 04-05-2013 08:41 PM

he didn't mention any PCM updates. that said, I'll have to check for an OBD2 port on my 94 now, although I doubt severely that it has one. :(
