I have 08 F-450 with 6.4 had problems with it since 40000 ran great up till then started with leaking radiator then 3 times for EGR which included leaving stranded last time and hauled in on flat bed took 2 weeks figure out it was same problem i had in the past took it back in for radiator leak agian at 71000 they told me i had pay for for that one they reprogrammed the PCM,TCM 3 times i just got it back from ford after 2 weeks they had to put crank case oil cooler kit in which they remove the cab to do that which took a week got it back it was leaking engine oil for the same area took it back in they remove cab to fix that i have 99600 miles on it i didnt do anything to it because didnt want to void warrenty i been very unhappy with that truck has 4.88s that shouldnt have problems pulling

I bought 01 f-250 brand new with v-10 reg cab for 21000 put snow plow the day i bought pulled same trailers pushed snow put 200000 miles on it never left me sitting on road only thing i fixed on that was tires and brakes matter fact had to use it to come get me and the trailer several times because i had so many problems

[QUOTE=markjc2;263992]On two separate occasions my '08 SD has tripped off the cruise control, lost power and started bucking like a mule. It wouldn't accelerate over 40mph regardless of throttle position. The boost guage would rise slightly and then drop rapidly with the power loss, but no check engine lights would trip. The truck has 40k on it, had plenty of fresh fuel, is up to date on filters & maintenance, had Ford cetane booster in it, etc. After nursing it to a safe spot I shut the engine off and restarted it and the problem was gone and hasn't returned again. It coincidently happenend while heading in to a stiff head wind. My area dealerships have no clue, but are more than happy to check it out (drive it down the road at a price of $85.00 / hour) in the attemot to duplicate it. Any suggestions? I have better things to spend money on.[/QUOTE

idk what the temp was when this happened but with you sayin that you were driving into a strong head wind when this occured, and if your truck is stock i would think it could have been simply to much cold air into the fuel mix so i would try maybe a programer(id try this first) or a mild set of injectors..however i am new to the diesel world so i could be wrong, but its always worth a try

Hope somebody can help with this?:humm:Its happened twice now when climbing a steep hill,my revs climb to 3000 rpm but very little power,I was pulling a 5000 pound boat, motor and trailer and 3000 pound camper on the truck. The revving is quite high but no torque, almost like the tranny was slipping or something. This has happened once in Palm Desert area(just the camper on the back) and once in Alaska pulling the boat with camper.Any ideas out there? Thx

Any updates?

So I joined just to try and get some guidance on this exact issue.
I am a paramedic and our ambulance is a 2008 F-350 with ~160k miles. We experience power loss roughly ever month or so, generally between 300 and 350 hours of run time. Yes, this is a major safety issue, especially if you are transporting a very sick and or dieing person to the hospital or just trying to get to them to begin with. There's not much more embarrassing than flying by people then having to pull over and turn off your truck and driver by them again.

We have just under 160k miles on the chassis, I believe this is the second engine on the unit, but I am not positive. We have gone through a few turbos and a radiator or two. This is not really all that unusual for the amount a "abuse" the trucks receive on an almost 24 hour basis.

The fuel is blamed the problem by the dealership, but has happened on our red diesel as well as pump diesel with all the additives in both. The fuel filter is being replaced at 350 hours and this alleviates the problem for about a month. If you pull over and turn the truck off and restart it, there are no problems for a while. This seems to be isolated to the '08. Our system has an '09 and '11 with 0 issues. The 2011 is actually very nice, we already have about 70k on it with the only problem is the headlight switch.

I need some help here please. Tired of going to our tired, worn out 2004 F-350 back up truck with 200k+ on it. Although that damn 6.0 will not die. Makes me miss my '99 7.3.....

350 hours is how many miles for you guys? Have you guys tried taking matters into your own hands? What are your capabilities, have you tried scanning them at all? Is it possible it's going into regen?

Uhh 350 hours is probably about 10k miles, I'm just guessing. Our trucks run a pretty good portion of the day. I have put my scanner on it for my jeep and it doesn't find any trouble codes. I'll be honest, I don't know what regen is. It occasionally says drive to clean exhaust filter or cleaning exhaust filter. It has no noticeable change in performance while this happens. Other than this issue the truck runs pretty well and in about a month or so the truck will be headed for auction and the module will be remounted on a new chassis. We will probably get a 6.7, our '11 with the 6.7 has not had any powertrain issues, just the headlight switch went out at 37k miles.

Regen is the cleaning of a plugged DPF filter. The DPF filter (diesel particulate filter) traps every little bit of soot going out the exhaust. When this becomes clogged enough (there's a pressure sensor to record this data) it will go into a "regen" mode, or what you're seeing as exhaust filter cleaning. It will have reduced power during this time. It basically dumps a ton of raw fuel into the exhaust and burns all of that soot out. If it doesn't get the pressure it needs in time, it will just automatically do it every so many miles. My guess is this is the power loss you're feeling. It should only take a few minutes of highway driving, but if it's sitting in the driveway (less heat) it might take up to 30-45 minutes to complete. Not completing it means it's just going to keep happening. Regen is also a fuel mileage killer.

I'm not sure if the ambulance packages are prepped any different though... since you're getting the exhaust cleaning message I'd have to imagine they're the same.

Most guys will tune them and do a DPF delete, this brings power WAY up (depending on tune) and mileage will come up quite a bit too.

10k miles would be ok for fuel filters, but I have a feeling you can't go off of miles since your ambulance probably runs a lot of the time just in park. You may want to change them at an hour interval instead of a mileage interval. Only use OEM Ford or motorcraft/international fuel filters too. I wouldn't be running red fuel in it either with the DPF still on, chances are this is increasing the amount of regens or exhaust cleaning's you're having to do.

Thanks for the info. It does not seem to have any power issues when it says cleaning filter. We do run red diesel in the trucks. i wish we could remove the DPF on the truck, however I don't think the county would too kindly on that. We have our fuel filters changed with motorcraft filters every 250-300 hours, roughly once every four weeks. I don't think it's the DPF regen because it stops when we have the fuel filter replaced, then doesn't happen again until about 240+ hours. I just asked and the shop manager said the low pressure pump was replaced not long ago, and the problem persists. I'll ask him to check with ford to see if there is a new flash for the PCM, maybe one that doesn't regen as often.
